11:4772934In fact Vic, according to Pikes 1938 directory that was Henry Betts' greengrocer's shop. When we moved to Dover in 1949 (I was five) I spent Saturday mornings on my own walking round the town to get to know it. Imagine a child of five doing that these days.
Anyway after the war the only building on that side of the road left standing was the still operating Hoppers bakery at number 33, approximately where the sports centre is now. I took an interest as my parents ran the bakery at 4 and 5 Peter Street. I did have some pictures of that but when my mother died my brother put them all in his loft and then promptly "lost" them.
If Kath or Bob have any pictures of the Branch Street and Peter Street area I would love to see them.

15:2872967Interesting what the German`s have done to the Marine station in your picture Kath. I think DHB have done a more efficient job though.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

15:4072969I think the marine station is in need of work, looks like the roof is rusting as there are airbags not fitted around the ironwork:
Been nice knowing you :)

17:3473144Peter Street/Branch Street- war damage pictures seem to be rare.
Bob may have an old picture (no wartime) of Peter Street if this is of interest?

17:3073414 An interesting official photograph here, this was taken in October 1938 down the Marine station, nearly one year before war was declared. This readiness for war occurred at numerous key location`s throughout the country.

09:0777194Wow, thanks Kath. From memory I would say it's on the right hand side going towards Maison Dieu between the bomb site just before Spring Gardens and the rear entrance to the ironmongers (Morecrofts) which was in the High Street. At 54 were the Hoffmeyers, next door was Mrs Bushell, she was renowned as the street's nosey person. Next to her was Andy Claw who before he retired had a fish shop further down the road.
Going towards the High Street was Sid Castle's scrapyard and next to that the Friend In Need run by Rene Maxted.
I'm afraid I can't remember who ran the Globe on the other side of the road.
I spent my formative years playing cowboys and indians on the bomb site by the way, the craters made perfect hiding places. Halcyon days.

09:5477362Old bomb sites were interesting! We used to collect old broken crockery from them, in Grimsby when I was young.
