Councillors will become even more remote. quote #20.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
They are anyway, Town Councillors and District Councillors get voted in and simply disappear. Nothing new there.
No-one will fight to keep them, because they have become more or less irrelevant.

Canterbury will become the lead Council

The sooner this happens the better. DDC has 40+ Councillors, Deal and Dover combined another 30+ Town Councillors, then take KCC Councillors as well.
Approaching 100 people plus back up staff to do what exactly? Report dog poo on the pavement and sit in pointless meetings.
If the number is cut by more than half so only the good ones are left, nothing will change for the worse and we'll save a fortune.

David this proposal has ZERO impact on the number of parish/town councillors.
The business case suggests that across the 5 districts the number of councillors will be cut by between 70 & 100.
It also clearly states the senior management teams will be cut by 80% with smaller more targeted cuts amongst the rest of the officers.
The overall aim is to save £40m per year

Does anyone personally know of anyone employed by any of these councils that have a union membership? It would be interesting to hear what their unions take on it is and whether they have been briefed more than we are aware.

Is that the same Paul Carter whose allowances and expenses for 15/16 were £57,750?

I spoke too soon DDC have just announced that they will holding a consultation on the proposed East Kent Council right after the forthcoming KCC Elections. As we know there are consultations and consultations.

The plot thickens, just heard from Sir Peter Wallace and according to him 250 residents of the district will be telephoned and subjected to a 12 minute interrogation of their views - so not a full blown public consultation.

Will that be random phone calls or those who will give the required answer, I suspect the latter.

The good councillor Wallace does not unfortunately understand what is proposed (again).
There will be 10,000 printed surveys available in libraries etc + anyone can fill it in on the interweb. So ALL of the public can make their views known if they can be arsed.
In addition there will be a randomised telephone survey, 250 in each district, which as a sample size will, I vaguely remember from the briefing last week, give a 95% confidence of error between +/- 3%.
No, I don't like Stats - viewing it as a sort of scientific guessing, preferring Pure and Applied Maths - but I do at least understand it. Doh!

Not that it matters as Shepway voted not to go forward with the proposal.

I hope we will be given all the information needed to make an informed opinion unlike now where there would be a lot of guesswork.
I like the idea in principle but need to know much more about the practicalities before filling in any survey.
