Sir Reg will be dancing around one of his detached houses tonight at the news, surprisingly Ashford is mentioned - I would have thought that was big enough on its own.

I think to have less council,s is alot better been saying that for years the UK have far to many of them and also we need to cut back on the smaller parish council

I have mixed feelings re larger authorities. It will mean less Councillors who will be more remote than they are now.I do think there should be less pomp with the Town Councils Do we need Town Sargeants etc I believe in Parish Councils they do a lot of good local work .They are closer to the communities they represent.Having visited 28 of the Parish Councils whilst I was Chairman of the Council I saw some excellent work going on.You can not beat the old fashioned Councillor who really knows their community.Too much money is spent on Health and Safety and long reports. On crossing the Ts and dotting the Is.Meetings for the sake of meetings.I believe in seeing a problem and getting on with resolving it.

A lot of people are concerned at services being more remote but branch offices will still be available as they are today. Councillors would be less accountable though.

Whilst all this makes sense to the money saving bean counters and various councillors who think they will be even more important if they are on a council covering a larger area, the question is at what level decisions should be taken.
To cite but one example the people of Deal are apparently not happy funding the new Leisure Centre as it will be sited nearer Dover.
Just wait until our council tax money is being used to plug the hole in the money-pit known as Dreamland or wasted on the campaign to keep Manston as an Airport!

People in Deal have Tides leisure centre which is much superior to our current one plus they will soon have a state of the art renovated cinema.

Strong arguments for and against, councils are becoming evermore cash strapped and cutting the number of councillors will be a saving but decision making will seem even more distant than it is now.
Canterbury and Ashford will be calling the shots.

Dover does not have any productive Council.
It has the Dover Harbour Board.

It would appear that while America plans to 'drain the swamp' we are looking to enlarge ours!
