18:3591503Not a difficult decision really if it was 40% dead.... it could either continue to look nice or potentuially KILL people if it fell into the traffic !!!!!
Been nice knowing you :)

18:3991504but was it 40% dead?
if it was that dangerous they would have closed off the road prior to the date of felling.
maybe pat will have more details of the rumoured chopping down on sunday.

No reply from KCC ,Nigel or Gordon re stopping Sunday work...I do add that it is only that some local residents spoke to the contractors last Sunday and said they would be back next Sunday. It would be good for KCC to either confirm or deny that more tree work (and felling) will take place. We wait and see.

I have no problem with a geuine dangerous tree being felled provided it is replaced. At present KCC do not intend to do so and the DDC response is not surportaive although as clearly shown on Howards picture there is plenty of room to get past the tree (My mother-in-law as mentioned before has no problem on a mobility scooter).
It is this type of statement that then calls into question re the state of the tree in the first place particularly as according to DDC it has been in decline for years...earlier tree work would have saved the tree.

21:4191518If the contractors are coming back on Sunday I would guess it is to grind the remaining stump out. There should be some nice wood chippings for the garden if anyone wants them.

the rumour is that they are coming back to decimate more of our trees.
i have never had a satisfactory explanation as to why the trees by the side of the railway parallel with clarendon road were slaughtered, made a lot of wildlife homeless. we must be vigilant or there will be no trees left.

22:0491523Sorry Howard, I thought the comment that Pat referred to meant they were returning to Maison Dieu.
My neighbour was sawing branches off his much hated tree the other day and we all hoped the whole thing was going. No such luck it is still there, now a rather funny shape, ready to shed its needles everywhere next Autumn.

22:1291524Leaves on the lines Howard - I am sure half of the train problems these days are from no management of the lineside trees....

08:4791538I wrote to Kent Highways about the tree-felling - I had an acknowledgement, but not a proper reply.
Trees really add a lot to the street-scene - in a positive way, so there really needs to be a valid reason for the trees to be felled.
If I do get a reply, I'll let you know what they say.

09:1291541Regarding my post (No.9), it does make me wonder whether the Highways, as well as Elec and telephone services, do not have to obtain permission to lop or fell trees 'in their way' or causing problems. Does anyone know?

18:5891876Just thought I would give update
No workmen yesterday , possibly due to high winds.
Nigel Collor has come back with the following from Kent Highway Services:
" The tree was a large beech tree. When it was inspected, it was found to have major dead wood in the crown (80% of the tree) and it was deemed that the most appropriate action would be to remove the tree as it proposed a hazard.
Another tree will be planted, however it will be a standard sized tree (6-8ft) as any major sized trees would not establish properly and it's survival would be minimal"
Many thanks Nigel. Just need to know if any other trees are going to be felled in Maison Dieu Rd.
Too late to ascertain if the tree was that dead, however last summer it was in full leaf.

19:0991877Since post 31 above.
Just had confirmation e-mail from Nigel that no plan to fell any more more trees in Maison Dieu Rd.

18:3191989i suppose that kent highways give precedence to the councillors that they are answerable to roger, noticed in pat's post 32 that no more trees are to be felled in maison dieu road.
what about the rest of dover?
