Excellent news Bright House going bust (never shop in a place whose name rhymes with the Scots for toilet).
A couple of years ago I got in touch with Sir Peter Wallace (remember him) to set up a stall outside the local Dover branch with three Henry vacuum cleaners on it. Amazon C.£100, British Heart Foundation C.£40 second hand, Bright House £200+ and hand out leaflets advising people against using the bastards.
Apparently he was advised by the local Labour party to have nothing to do with me! So it goes.

Whilst I would rather not see another void on the main shopping thoroughfare in Dover I shed no tears for this bunch of shi*ehawks who preyed on the poor and vulnerable.

Hi
Bob
I think you will find most didn't Want to be associated with P W
Thus probably why he didn't stand as he was unlikely to win
And unfortunately with him went another lab clkr who got to close to him and bigger than the peopje (or so she thought)
Instead people voted her out
Getting back to the town centre
MR Wallace and other lab cllrs made a big splash on the town centre
But nothing more was heard.

So if all these shops are going bust,
WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE IN THE TOWN?
Or
WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE AND PART OF TOWN?

It's not what we would like to see in town 'buses every five minutes heading to our house driven by unicorns'?
It's what might work.
Once upon a time I visited Folkestone and the place where De Hahn's (?) son had set up an office space rentable by the hour (see WeSpace). I also visited the Discovery Park where they had done the same.
Talking to Councillors and council officers they just could not understand the concept in spite of pointing out what was happening at Silicon Roundabout in London.
Someone, (even DHB!), should set up multiple office space in Dover. Like it or not loads of people are going to be working away from home and are fed up with working on the kitchen table.
Flexible office space. Rentable by the hour, day, week. High speed broadband. Zoom conferencing room. Bike storage. Free coffee.
Fortunately DDC were much more interested in turning Stembrook Coop into a tinker's market.

That ship has sailed IMO - who wants to sit in an office, let alone with strangers.

Restructuring, 50 stores split between Edinburgh woollen mills and peacocks are set to close. Talks are on going but it is likely that we will lose peacocks in Dover.

On a brief couple of visits to town last week parked in Stembrook car park ,sat waiting for my daughter to return to the car .there were several drunks hanging around .Driving back up passed the Charlton Centre we noticed how neglected some of the shops were.Yesterday another trip to Doctors for flu jab.Parked in car park at Morrison’s .Daughter did buy something whilst I was having flu jab.Once again saw several youths clutching cans of alcohol.I think the Town Councillors want to look at the town and the perception visitors receive .Empty shops need clearing some of the buildings really neglected.
on the other hand went to Sandwich .Big sign as you come into town Sandwich is open for business,The town was busy.Several cafes were doing a good trade .We sat eating light refreshments overlooking the Guildhall,Buses coming and going people out visiting the shops .
No scruffy drinkers and the public toilet very clean .
something needs to be done about the drinkers and people openly taking drugs .in Dover. There are one or two nice shops in Dover who struggle to survive but something needs to be done to give the town a spring clean .

Sandwich pays into the DCC coffers, as does Deal. Dover is just the poor relation, so it's no big deal if it's scruff.
There is no money in Dover, no one is spending....that's why it is suffering. Same everywhere. La verde on the high street sells cheese and onion sandwiches, and is run by an italian who has clearly dumbed down the menu to meet the local tastes!
It is what it is...........

The answer seems clear to me. Although people in Sandwich and Deal moan about DDC always being focused on Dover it has actually benefited them enormously. They get left out of all these crazy ideas like building St James next to a high street or big screen, white cliffs experience etc, a leisure centre which most people can't get to and now they are going to spend millions on the town hall.
Dover has had the money to really make a huge difference to the town and DDC have wasted it.

Sandwich is more affluent because of it's quaintness while Deal has really only become more affluent since the pits closed.
Dover has remained stagnant because it is known by far to many as simply a port town and the stepping stone to France, its historical side has never been properly promoted or even enough. That awful road to Eastern Docks cutting the town off from the sea front definitely has not helped the image to anyone who makes their way to catch a ferry, full of lorries and the depressingly dull rear view of the flats.
