Paramore closed during the war years, re-opened around 1950, on the corner of the cross roads was the tailors now pulled down, and Andrews the newsagents, later becoming Patels, Shaws sweet shop, later known as Godsmarks, I lived on the Terrace near where the milkman delivered and opposite was Potters Garage, later becoming Elys, just past Paramore was Rands the greengrocers, then came Gladishes, Scrivens, and the Coops, up Wyndym Road you had the chip shop, and Bardens sweet shop at the Top, I cant remember the name of the lower sweet Shop, carrying on up South Road you had Moseling the bakers, used to go along the at 6-30 in the morning and get nice hot rolls, down in Elthelbert you had Stewarts the old shoe repairer, in the square you had Floods the Fish shop, the bakers, Kings and Hoys sweet shop, Hoys made lovely Toffee apples, at the end of east street you had Hambrooks the chemist, Moselings the butchers, down on the hill you had files the newsagents, Dansons greengrocers, and Whitmore, down lower on the corner of De-burgh Street you had Snellers garage lower down nearer the Eagle you had another chip shop, and Wares had 2 shops made lovely ice cream. I must stop reminising

Ray
was there a White Lion? It was used as an unofficial Post Office social club! I remember going there when I worked at the PO at Christmas as a student but am unsure of the name of the pub.

Andy - thanks again.
Paul - I didn't have you in mind although I can see why you might think why i did because of my past posts, mainly WAG-related. In fact I seek to avoid remarks of a personal nature and my comments were aimed at an aspect of local, national and global culture. I wish you all the best in your quest to breathe new life back into our town.

Yes Keith
those were the days, I used to go in old gal Shaws get a 1d drink, made up of a wee bit of flavouring, water and a squirt of gas from an oxegen bottle, thats the first fizzy drink I knew, she also used to sell toffee, broken up with a tiny hammer, there was a real community way back then. Tower Hamlets also had an hospital, the old fever hospital, later the eye hospital, as well as Stwert the shoe repairer there was another, can't remember name, on the corner of Lowther Road, you could go round the Chapel in Towere Street and sit and watch the magic lantern Shows, we had it all

I seem to remember that the Bing factory in Canterbury was bought by Silver Spring in the early 70s. Recently Silver Spring revived the brand name.
