There it was, gone, a pile of rubble! The toilets next to Harbour House! what a asset they could have been this summer and for all the users of the seafront.

Still got toilets on PoW Pier, Seasports Centre, Marine Court, De Bradlei, 'Starbucks'. I for one would much prefer to support a local business than have to use some of the generally grim public loos !!
Been nice knowing you :)

Right opposite the most used part of the beach, not a asset? those you mention apart from the POW Pier, which is about a mile walk away, are all businesses that do not want people going in just to use the toilets.

They were not at all "grim" Paul. The stalls were magnificent, made of porcelain and the water pipes were all polished brass, at least they were the last time I used them many years ago.

Martin, they have started to set up the portable loos now, the ones that resemble Doctor Who's magical inter-planetary travelling box

At one time Richard Mahony of the White Cliffs Boat and Bus Tours, wanted to take those toilets over and run them. He wouldn't have looked after them personally of course, but paid someone to do so, but they would have been open and cleaned regularly and given someone a job, keeping them clean and charging just a little to use them.

Not talking about those specifically Alec (#4), just generally, mostly because of disrespect by the users !! I'd rather support a local business and use their facilities which are generally more modern and maintained.

But public toilets should be available to all for free and in convenient places not too far from public activity areas. This one as Martin has pointed out was at the most used part of our seafront. We should not be expected to go to local businesses nearby and have to buy something to justify using their toilet facilities. Perish the thought that families enjoying a day out on Dover beach have to escort their children a mile down the pier or to a local business

Paul, could you please tell us what is likely to happen to the site, that is if you know.

I reckon it will just be extra parking in the car park that is behind it.

Sorry Jan, I don't know. I reckon Martin might be near the Mark, DHB car park tends to be full.

i think an extension to the car park is the most likely outcome, what with need for spaces when the new regime comes in.
i can see it now "this space reserved for nw1" painted over what was there before.

Knocking down the toilets is the most pragmatic way I can think of to ensure that the squabbling over whether they should be open or closed is finally resolved. What a shame that another facility (literally, in this case) in Dover has to be closed. No public toilets at that end, the busy end, of the promenade is something shameful for the town....a recurring theme, seemingly.

They know how to pick on a toilet block, but won't dare raise their hand against Burlington Block!
Oh if we had a Local Government that would dare... after all, who dares, wins
But a toilet block!

Last time I was in Hythe Sea Sports place a person just popped in to use the toilet as the toilets opposite were closed. He got a right dressing down from someone behind the bar who demanded that he buy a drink for the privilege. Which is it, can the public use the place or not?
