21:21693872000 years ago though Alexander, any extra lighting would`ve been welcome, but today, it`s way over the top. Too much light pollution, often in places where it could be cut back. Our lamp post outside was inoperative for about 3 or 4 month`s a few years back. It was pleasant without it.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

21:2669388You may be right, Colin, but urban areas and rural areas are two different kinds of life, when it comes to streets where people transit at night! Imagine someone going home after a glass of cider, and losing their way! Or stumpling over a step and descending quickly to the bottom of Tower Hamlets.
The other night I stumbled quickly up the steps, and could only see when I reached the lamp post.

22:0269402So, the street light wasn't much use then Alexander, it might as well have been switched off!

22:2069405funny you should emention gas lights paul, when i lived in loughton in the early eighties there were an old couple that never embraced the new fangled electricity.
when they went down to the gas board showroom for a new mantle, a member of staff went into the stock room and came back producing one.

23:1269416I am old enough (just) to remember the blackout during the war and the joy there was when it was all over and the lights came back on (gas lamps). I remember wearing small round luminous discs on our lapels when we went out on the streets

23:3569418No, Sid. The steps were illuminated at the bottom and the top, but not in the central part. I only found out when I was so far!

00:1669431I hate to tell you this Alec, but those luminous discs were there to make it easier for the German gunners to spot you!
