18:1669189This is the first time I've looked in on the Forum since this thread started at 07.55, so it isn't a case of waiting for instructions and as Barry said, we don't have a Conservative whip - not locally any way.
I think a consultation would be in order first to determine what people would be happy not to have; maybe street lighting after midnight is one of them.
Don't forget that Essex is a County, Dover is a District, so if savings are to be made, they'll be made by KCC not DDC
Maybe some areas and not others may be the way to go.
I also know that you can't please all of the people all of the time, so some will grumble and some will be pleased.

18:3669190i personally think that is not a bad idea at all.. and if i could ask KCC to switch the one outside my bedroom window that would be great!! even every other one would be better, and lesson the street pollution.
Whilst on holiday in Wales I have never seen soo many stars because they switch off the street lights after a certain time, and there was no orange or red glow over the hills..
I have always argued that we dont need as many of the street lamps as there are, and if anyone has driven the a2 recently , they will have seen the cats eyes have been replaced by little led lights, and they are fab..
maybe the way to go ladies and gents...

20:4169240Actually, if we turn them all off the old Froggies will get really paranoid about where we've gone.

So, let's go for it!!

21:2469254The main roads need their lights all night but dimmed. The side street lights do not need to be on all night when the majority are asleep.
Pedestrians can always use a torch, cars and bikes have lights so there is no need for street lights all the night.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

22:5769267Did we not cope back in the wartime without roadsigns or lights? and cars on 6volt with diffusers on them?

22:5869268Jacqui, I didn;t suggest that we should have bazoukis and Spanish guitars playing to four in the morning, but was making a paragony concerning other tourist places that do have illumination all night.
You missed the point, therefore, and also conveniently missed the point that Dover's authorities have been promoting Dover for tourism, which is what I pointed out, and that it would be unseemly to then turn out the street-lights at night.
As for our Country, as you point out, this is no more your Country than it is mine, and I have no intention of going somewhere else

23:0169270Buddy G, I hope gov. doesn't go to war-time extremes in order to save money! But I would point out that the ancient Atheniens made a point of illuminating their streets even then with wax-candles!
Thyere is a lot of pointing out on this thread, though!

23:0569271Roger W, reading this thread I am concerned: it seems that we could be going back to the Dark Ages!
However, if we do, to Jacqui's annoyance I will make a point of being Celtic and Anglo-Saxon!

23:0969272That's ail.interesting Alexander, would appear that a lpw level of illumination would be the best rather than a total black-out if only for safety!
There was a cute wartime song on this theme called 'Crash, Bang, I want to go home' sung by Phyllis Robins, all about the dangers of the black-out.
Hopefully sense will prev

23:0969273Sid, I though you were in favour of the e.u.! Today you seem as if you wish to tear up 37 years of common market and e.u. so as to annoy Europe, do I gather? So! It was all for nothing then!
You ought to know that the e.u. will never allow a member state to return to the Dark Ages!

23:1269274Buddy, I hope it will, as I still have to go home tonight after working! I need the street illumination even in the alley-ways, which is where I will be passing.

There's always a little truth behind every "Just kidding", a little emotion behind every "I don't care" and a little pain behind every "I'm ok".

14:3469336Jacqui, I am just listening to a Greek bazouki! Suppose a Greek trireme arrived at Dover at night, and the sailors wanted to go to a pub! Would they find their way with the stret lights all out!

14:5069338They could follow the stars Alexander, like there ancestor`s did. Our earliest great astronomer`s were Greek.
Tell them that I came, and no one answered.

16:3269347What annoys me intensely is to see lights on in the daytime - for weeks on end sometimes - what a waste !!
Street light nearest to us in our cul de sac always went off at 11pm. Lately it stays on all night, shining brightly into our bedroom when we don't need it ... WHY ??
it's not exactly a metropolis here in our small hamlet ....

20:4869378I think street illumination at night was devised for people to see in the streets when walking, and also for the traffic, not so much for people inside their house.
However, views may vary here, but I do believe that the Stone Age people already illuminated their areas at night, to keep wild beasts away.
Could this proposal to turn off the street lights be a prelude to returning to pre Stone Age times?

20:5069379Colin, to follow the stars to a pub is somewhat new! Here in Dover we used to illuminate the Port at night even 2000 years ago.
