10:3879227#17. And if extra-terrestial intelligence was discovered Alexander, I`m 100% certain that religious group`s certainly would start taking an interest in it all, and at the same time, juggling it all about like their writer`s do as if they knew all along, and start writing into their religion. They`d have no choice. Regarding where would religion stand in the event of contact, I was more into wondering as to whether the religious world here would unite (for once), or whether each religion would start preaching that these extra terrestial`s must be Christian`s or Muslims etc. If they suddenly get classed as more of God`s creation, it once again knock`s the `we`re God`s special creation brigade` that we have on this planet surely? Once again, I am very much interested in as to why you don`t believe other life exist`s beyond us?

10:4879234#17. I haven`t said anything about not reading science fiction Alexander, and indeed, some science fiction has become science fact. I said forget science fiction in this case, as I was more after member`s thought`s on this facinating subject without flying saucer`s and alien abduction`s and all the similar material entering the discussion, as it can so easily take over and the whole thread get`s trashed.

11:0979236There's a form of communication in bacteria called quorum sensing, when enough of them get together and they all agree conditions are right they'll communicate with each other by chemical signals and make a joint decision to switch to a different sort of growth activity. Now in the processes involved that could be likened to a planning decision being taken in committee at DDC - but is it intelligent life?
So there might well be intelligent life out there that we have no possibility of detecting as it doesn't put out the sort of signals we're looking for, not because they're still in our equivalent of the Stone Age but because it's a form of intelligence we can't imagine.

11:1479237Indeed you are right Colin, science fact has often come from science fiction, indeed fact has often surpassed fiction.
Arthur C Clarke reputedly wrote about satellites before they were fact - one example.
The universe is so vast, there are billions of stars in our 'small' galaxy and billions of galaxies.
It is incomprehensible that there should not be life elsewhere. Indeed the latest scientific surveys indicate there are even more earth-like planets than previously thought making the chances of life even higher. then of course there may be life very different to what we know!!!!

13:1779259Jules Verne wrote of launching spacecraft as explosive projectiles from Florida long before NASA picked the location to take advantage of the earths spin etc. From there they have successfully launched robot explorers to Mars (not all of them crashed) as well as probes to Venus, the outer planets and even into the depths of space beyond our solar system. Traces of water have been found on Mars and the Moon as well as being identified in the atmospheres of planets orbiting distant stars. None of this has been reported in Watchtower, or similar publications, but is freely available in more scientific books, journals or on the internet.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

14:3379267Arthur C Clarke's seminal article in "Wireless World" in October 1945 is reproduced on the link below.
It laid the foundation for the development of communication satellites and television satellites located in geostationary orbits above the Earth. As a consequence, the belt at 22,000 miles above the Earth in which geostationary positioning is possible is now known as the Clarke Belt.
His work has had a profound effect on my life. For twenty years, I was a Radio Officer in the Merchant Navy, using the ionospheric layers to conduct long range radiocommunications around the globe. Satellite communications rendered this job superfluous and I became an ETO (Electro Technical Officer) charged with maintaining all the electrical and electronic systems onboard ship. Today, I spend a considerable portion of my working life utilising, maintaining and expanding the numerous satellite systems employed onboard.

17:3879310Colin, in reply to your post 21, I don't believe in life on other planets because the Bible does not teach us to. And Jesus Son of God has taught us to live a Christian life in this world and aim at achieving Life Eternal.

the bible and other major religious tomes do not say that there is no life else where.
they merely refer to people on earth and how they should lead their lives, absolutely no mention anywhere of life on other planets.

18:3279325Blimey Alex - the ancients who wrote these texts knew nothing about science and the stars, it was beyond their understanding. Placing those texts above knowledge, logic and common sense is very strange to me.

19:0679331Interesting posting`s from all above. Alex, the bible doesn`t teach us that dinosaur`s ruled the Earth for 200 million years, so do you deny they existed? The Christian`s in the U.S. are falsely teaching that dinosaur`s and human`s lived alongside each other. They`re real bible people, so are they rewriting it all? How much of the bible are you going to believe in, all of it, or pick and choose? A very nice thought eternal life, and personally I think, if we`re around for some time yet, our future generation`s may actually achieve it, though we can only speculate on that, and which way evolution may have taken us, or indeed some manmade way. If there is any intelligent life out there, there`s always the chance it`s been around thousand`s or even million`s of year`s before us, and we can`t begin to imagine what is possible in this universe with that head start. Read and enjoy your bible by all means Alex, but for heaven`s sake, question thing`s, open your eyes and look beyond your back yard. So much to learn and enjoy.

19:1779332`There are infinite worlds both like and unlike this world of ours. We must believe that in all worlds there are living creatures and plants and other things we see in this world`....... Who wrote these words?

19:1879333That is very well said Colin.
We must not accept anything blindly and without reason, specially religion because religious extremists of all faiths have such an awful record of atrocity in the name of their beliefs, they deserve question and scrutiny more than anything else.

20:4879367The Tunguska impact of 1908 has been classed as an angelic manifestation by bible reader`s. It doesn`t matter what happen`s out of the usual on this planet, some religious group has got to jump in there and give it a religious meaning. Why? As I`ve said before on here, why can`t a flower look beautiful without believing in fairies at the bottom of the garden creating it? But then again, maybe the like`s of me should counter it all with another version of the Tunguska event. `Alien`s are trying to let us know they`re up there, and sending us a freindly shot across the bow`s as it were, to unite us all and get out of our cradle, grow up and start progressing to other places, (planet wise)`.

21:0479370Answer to post#32. Epicurus 341-270 B.C. a Greek philosopher wrote these words, 2,300 years ago! He based his ideas on two other Greek philosopher`s, Democritus and Leucippus who lived two centuries before he did. It`s to our everlasting regret that their philosophies were not continued, as in the end we got stuck with Aristotle, whose views of one Godly world only, held up scientific progress for 1,700 years! Wobetie anybody who dared to challenge it, the church would burn them alive! Hopefully, all the above explains why I`m a non-believer of any religion. I don`t knock religious people, except when they distort the facts, and twist them about to prop up their belief`s.

23:0079391Colin, Jesus is the Messiah, the Christ. This is basic Religion. The Muslims also believe that Jesus is Christ. It may not be widely known, but the Koran does state this!
The Old Testament is the only Holy Scripture that believing Jews believe in, and the Old Testament phrophetically heralds the coming of Christ, who came to the Town of Bethlehem as a Child!

16:3279466That`s fine Alex, but why didn`t your God place other beings on other planets? And why did he waste so much time and energy on creating all these billions of galaxies containing billions of stars, and planet`s? What a waste! Not a very good arguement for not believing in life on other world`s I`m afraid.
