i must admit that i didn't know that the bbc were getting funding from the e.u. this must be stopped as they have enough income from the licence fee and overseas sales of their programmes.

"The BBC admitted... that it has received nearly £3million in grant money from the European Union over the past four years.
Other grants totalling £16million came from local authorities across the UK. The money was spent on "research and development projects". "
I must have missed the list of Local Authorities, it is surely in the piece somewhere?

This is easy to resolve, just make the licence fee optional.
There'll be millions like me who wouldn't bother.

Three million is small beer is it not...would hardly pay for the tenure of a director general.
You would probably find that other national broadcasters across Europe are getting the same or similar funding.

The above is from Tom's link, possibly the real reason for the partial move to Salford.

agree that £.3 million over 4 years is unlikely to affect editorial policy, of more concern is the £.16 million from local authorities.
council tax payers will be miffed to hear that when there are basic services being cut all over the place.

Yes Peter, perhaps you should do just that.
I copied and pasted the entire Wiki entry from the word 'Appointments' down to the word 'Governors', just as it appears in the original, (oops!), except that, for reasons of textual clarity, I put the sub-headings in Bold. I then, for reasons of fair-play and balance gave a 'live' link to the whole page.

Well, Tom, for reasons of fair-play and balance I therefore found it appropriate to draw attention to Thompson's admission of left-wing bias which many might have missed.
Thank you, Chris, for your edit.

Peter, you finding something appropriate does in no way equate to you accusing me of "editing out" anything. You were mistaken, but instead of making your own point you chose to cast me as the villain. A response from me on that very point was necessary, that I chose to respond with some élan is nothing more than would have been expected.
A thrust merits a parry, a renewed thrust deserves a counter strike, that's life. Enjoy your hols.

Ok so you didn't edit it out, you just chose not to draw attention to it, buried as it was in the footnotes. That is fine, nobody expects you to put both sides of the debate, but that does not excuse your personal attack on me. Obviously in your lexicon, élan and vitriol are synonyms. Not in mine.
However, I was making my own point - that the BBC is riddled with political bias. The fact that I pointed out the 'missing link' and exposed the poverty of your argument does not cast you as the villain.

Perhaps the post of BBC chair ought to be an elected one.

Personally I prefer to sit on a chair Peter rather than elect one.
