137 local offices closing to be replaced by 13 regional ones,
Article does say
Four specialist offices will also operate at Telford, Worthing, Dover ...
Is there still an office in Dover somewhere (a quick internet search says Centurion House) or is it new?

As far as I am aware when Centurion House came down that was the end of a tax office presence in Dover, interesting that we will get a specialised one at some stage - more jobs.

Possibly something to do with the docks and cigarettes, etc?

Howard, when Centurion house closed down the tax office moved to the Dover Jobcentre, nothing more than just one desk and one member of staff it may still be operating from there.I called into see them a couple of years ago concerning a self employment issue. The man on the desk was very helpful and sorted what i needed to know at the time.I filled in a form that i needed and gave it back to him and asked for a photocopy of it which normally wouldnt have been a problem. He said that he couldnt do me a photocopy as the photocopy machine that was right behind him didnt belong to the tax office and was the property of the jobcentre and they wasnt allowed to use it and unfortunatly they didnt have one of their own to use anymore.I swear this is a true story,i couldnt believe it.I realised that this was yet another service being run into the ground.

Indeed Andy yet another service to the public being neglected. The plans are for far fewer staff and the public to make declarations online. The problem as I see it as that it could be a few years for a staff member to get around to vetting someone's self assessment and if the applicant has made a wrong calculation they could get a hefty bill. As we know with tax credits applicants have filled in the forms correctly but later they found out they had been overpaid through no fault of their own but still had to pay up.

I know someone whose department was taken over by the tax office, he said they are very inefficient compared with how his previous department was run, so Andy's example is no surprise at all.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.
