Personally I'd like to see death duties at 100% and income tax reduced accordingly.
Apart from the fact that dead people don't need money (other than a couple of coins to pay Charon the boatman) we would all try to pass on the money to our kids when they are more likely to need it (rather than when they too are retired!) and when we could still see the smiles on their faces.
No-one would want to end rattling round in an enormous mansion at the end which would reduce house price inflation and mean people are more likely to live in a house of the size they need (apparently the bed to person ratio in the UK is the highest it's ever been since the Black Death yet families are crammed into cramped accommodation whilst I have a five bed house rocketing up in price).
The money released would be spent on STUFF which people make and SERVICES giving employment.
Basically we could all enjoy living a bit more rather than saving our money for our children to inherit, who in turn will also save their money for their children to inherit etc etc.
Save less - live more I say. You only get one ride on the planet.
