Yes back-ups are important. I wonder how many people do regular back-ups, I learnt my lesson years ago.
incidentally, just because you appear to be getting spam from someone it doesn't necessarily mean their computer or email has been hacked. More likely the spammers are just forging the "from" address. If you've got a bit of technical knowledge you can tell this by looking at the email headers to see where it really came from. This has happened a lot to me in the past, spam sent out using my domain name. Not a lot you can do to stop it.

Except Colin in this case the recipients are from Vic's, and previously from Mike's address book.
In Mike's case my soundsgood address had about 10 other recipients while my londonroad address had a different selection. My wife had yet another group. All had links to different websites. Odd.

Well, I don't know about Vics case. Just saying it doesn't always mean your computer has been compromised.
Strong passwords are important as well, and don't use the same one for everything.

I've not spoken to Mike since but I know that he was away on holiday at the time so I don't know if he left his computer on or not.

Yes I've had one too...a surgeon in Delhi or something using Vics email.
