What a filthy and disgusting state they are in.What must it look like for visitors to this town, like something from a third world country. The council need to get someone round there to see for themselves,They hadnt been trashed when i saw them yesterday but an obvious lack of regular cleaning,i doubt they,ve had a good scrub in ages.As i mentioned in similiar threads, the council used to check them regulary but it seems like they dont bother at all anymore.Cannot believe theyre contractors get away with it.What an embarresment to our town they are.I hope the rest of our loos are not as bad as these.

I beleive they are cleaned at night all toliets and then closed so thats all day going without a attandant and one clean in the evening. Did we not have a fulltime attendant in 50/60/70? Maybe donations from public to keep a fulltime attandant would be a good idea and create some jobs and we can all have pee in a clean fresh place where we can be proud to be british.
If only everyone could be kind and honest what a better world we would be in.

I think these are the only toilets in the town now? The next one is in Morrisons. The one on the seafront is privately run so only opens 'at their convenience'! No pun intended. I agree, the Stembrook ones are an embarrassment to us.....

The ones in the Library are the best looked after, I thought the ones behind the Town Council offices were still operational plus the Charlton Centre.

Oh yes, I forgot those behind the council offices. They are old though, date back to the fifties I think. Do you remember, there were some at the back of the old main post office, facing Norman St and there were some more up Tower Hamlets Rd, by the corporation depot and I think there were some at Elms Vale Recreation ground? Also some along the seafront just to the west of Harbour House. And Buckland, are they still there, by the bridge?

Not been here that long Lewis, I remember the ones at the Western end of the promenade, nowadays people use the one in De Bradelei Wharf. The Buckland bridge ones were closed about 10 years ago despite them being fairly new.
The Town Council pays MacD, and a pub(forgotten which one) for people to use its facilities free of charge.

When I was young(!) there were also public toilets in Elms Vale Road and opposite the Cricketers, both now private houses. I also remember the ones in Tower Hamlets Road down steps by the railway - possibly the mankiest ever!
The Bull was the pub, although recently the gents in there have been in dire need of renovation.

The toilets at Buckland Bridge were at the bottom of Old Park Road just up from Hollis Motors, ideal if you had just got off the bus or waiting for one into town.

Is that why there's a random patch of greenery there?

The ones by the river are still there, boarded up.

Macari's Café used to be signed up to the scheme but are not so will just be "The Bull" in future.
I thought the Buckland Bridge toilets would have been ideal for the soup kitchen but it was thought they were too far from the town centre.

Ah yes, I remember the one opposite the cricketers, there was one at the horse trough too in Folkestone Rd - now a 'Bungaloo'!
So with more people here now, how do we manage? Maybe we never needed all those in the first place!

I imagine before elf and safety got their nose in, there was no requirement to provide toilets in the workplace, so all of the shopkeepers and staff in town would have needed somewhere to go and it wasn't that far back that people didn't even have toilets at home.

As i,ve mentioned in a previous thread on a similar subject, about 20 or so years ago i was inbetween jobs and took a temporary job with Serco who then carried out the maintainence and cleaning for the public loos for DDC.Most of the town ones had to be cleaned twice a day even though some would be regularly trashed, loo rolls chucked all over the place and worse.Regardless they had to be cleaned to a high standard and would be checked regularly by someone from the council,if they wasnt happy you would be called to go back and sort things out.It really looks like no-one checks anything anymore.

Is it still the public shooting gallery of choice? The only choice now apparently.
I was seriously attacked in that car park one night (hit on the head from behind) by a bloke with a scarf over his face. And a cap on his head. And with a hoody over said cap. (Chav much?). Reported it and was subsequently advised by plod to "avoid the park at night". Cameras were not pointing the right way apparently.
Well excuse me. I don't think there should be no go areas

.
Also, in the same vicinity, in daytime, was once asked if I had a "spare £3 mate". Not "a pound for a sandwich". Or "10p for a cup of tea". Or "20p for a phone call". Or "a spare fag". Just a flat £3. How specific? Flabbergasted I was.
Supposedly this area will become trendy and revitalise the town once the new shops open.

I talked last week to one of the lavatory cleaners who has to clear up after the 'use' of the facilities for other than their purpose.
He said when someone merely goes in for a p*ss or a cr*p, 'It's like a breath of fresh air'.

There has been increasing concern about the use of the public toilets in the town by drug addicts and dealers - including the use of baby changing rooms for drug taking. Used needles and other drugs paraphernalia are often left in the toilets. There have also been several other deaths at the Stembrook.

Members of the public have been using them since they were installed unaware that they are meant for staff working on the "revival" only.
