Nice one Phil. Howard will start taking photos again on the Friday and we'll see it as it should look. ( crap )

Well, every bit of rubbish out is a bit less building up. If the volunteers weren't taking it out it would look a damn sight worse than it does even now. It'd just build up forever.

Am I right Phil, in thinking that you can only take out rubbish/litter etc. that has been thrown into the river, but you are unable/not allowed to thin out the plant-life ?
In some places the plants are so thick and plentyful, that stuff thrown in, lands on it and holds it so a big build-up occurs and so it gets worse.
Do you know how often the grate the other side of the under-pass is cleared ? Whatever frequency it is, it needs to be more often.

Yes, the EA have responsibility for weeds and plantlife, the WCCP only touch the rubbish. As for the grate, I thought that was DDC's responsibility but I'm not sure so please don't quote me. That section is too dangerous to put volunteers in anyway due to the strong current, deep water and lack of exit in an emergency.

i have seen sita clean there in the past so it must be the responsibility of d.d.c.
whether it is in the contract with veolia is another question altogether.

For those birds to be walking, the river must be very shallow or the plants so thick, they can walk on the top of them.
Either way, not a good sight.

View 666 appeared there, on the thread.
It is certainly a sad sight! Should have gone up a number now.
What does DDC intend to do about the river?

Moorhens walk on the top of weeds any way and rubbish.
Alex asked a very reasonable question, what does the DDC intend to do about the river?
NOTHING.
They never have bothered and never will. The official body in charge of the river is the Environment Agency Alex.
Any questions or queries should be directed to them.

Even as a Councillor I have written to DDC and Portfolio Holders and never had the courtesy of a reply. Either they don't know what to do, or don't care.
There will be millions spent on Dover in the next 2/3 years, but parts of it will still resemble a tip/skip if nothing is done. We have 3/4 of a million pounds being spent (not DDC money I hasten to add) on walking/cycling paths along the Dour, but what is the point of it all if the river still looks (in places) like a sewerage works ?
The river should have been made a major feature of the Town and a warden post created; the cleanest parts are where no one can see, where the EA have had no influence on planting.

For your information, the WCCP volunteers removed 56 bags of rubbish from the Dour today so it should look a lot better for a while. Next clean up 28th July.

Oh dear, does that mean the now green iron and the shiny beer cask have gone.
Well done to all volunteers.
