i notice that the council in question has litter wardens, wish we had some.
i would imagine that the fines they issue for the new offence and the ones they issue for littering would at least part finance their jobs.

that is the generally held forum view jan, i know of only one councillor in favour of the idea(apologies to any that have campaigned for one).
it goes without saying - roger

I do not intend to upset anybody with the following comment.
There is only one reason I can think of for councillors or anybody else to be against the idea and that is they drop litter themselves.
At £30 to £50 a go (£75 in Maidstone) they would collect more than enough to pay wages and expenses per day. If the litter dropping ceases (fat chance) they can cut the number of jobs down.
Litter is chewing gum, dog mess, fast food wrapper, cigarette ends, beer cans and anything else you can think of that should not be there. I should think Pencester and the main shopping area alone would provide enough revenue.

Anything that prevents littering should be considered, the problem I see is that a lot of the people dishing out the fines in the Maidstone area are nothing more than bouncers in uniform and perhaps are not too fussy with the actual facts when exerting their powers.

there will always be the over zealous types, better than the present apathy here.
the top drawer at whitfield live here in the main, if an officer does not live in dover then there is no reason to visit - the shop over the road from the offices supplies all their needs.
i suspect that it is thought that it would mean a lot of work in setting up a team of litter wardens.

Do our PCSO not have the power to dish out fines for littering or is it yet another thing they can not do.

muddied the waters there jan, many of us have tried to find the answer to that question.
each chief constable decides what powers they have.
they have the power to chat cosily to abusive drunks and ignore pavement cyclists , so ignoring littering could come with the package

I knew it had been mentioned before but forgot the answer or non answer but put it down to old age.

JAN/SARAH P
IT's a little sad you have decided to slag off the role of the P.CS.O
You will recall i did put up a full and fruitful list of the powers and role of the P.C.S.O. and i believe the role plays a vital part of policing in kent and across the country.
for a reminder the powers are;
1; issue fixed penalty notices for a range of anti social behaviour including,
littering, graffiti, and riding on footpaths
2; confiscate alcohol and ciggys from youn people
3; deal with abandoned vehicles
4; stop vehicles for road checks under police and criminal acts
5; enforce police cordons under terrorism and stop and search legislation
of course the role takes in much more, bringing communities together
a very difficult role and one quite different to a police officer and always should be.
i hope that those that diss the role should maybe look into the role and how it has made a difference to so many communities across the UK
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS
Keith you may not agree with my sentiments but my post is based on events that I have seen , each of the items I described is because I have seen it happen , not slagging off but personal experience .
A genuine question Keith where can I find the stastics for penalty notices issued by Dover PCSOs for the offences listed above for say , the last 6 months |?

Great in theory Keith but we all know that 1. just does not happen. Sarah I have often asked the same question of the powers that be but have always received bull***t for an answer. I have therefore deduced that the number is zero. I once asked a prominent local copper (chief inspector) the question at a public meeting and was told that the police have bigger fish to fry.

keith doesn't say what powers our local pcso has.
sarah is right to comment on what she sees and should not be accused of dissing anyone.
i have tried at various times to get statistics from kent police on fines for pavement cycling and other misdemeanours, i have never received an acknowledgement to any.
Maybe a freedom of information request is the way to get the information or a letter to the Cheif inspector at Dover Police station , a thread could be started showing how many days elapse before an answer has been recieved , that may work
