I would hardly call a search and rescue pilot a "waste of space".

actully its nice to see wills in a proper job along with harry, thats more than i can say for the other hanger ons.
BarryW, I genuinely don't understand where you get the idea that anyone who doesn't swoon at the feet of the monarchy is boring, grey or envious! I don't need a bunch of strangers who have failed to earn the status to which they have been born largely because their ancestors were devious murdering barons to encourage me to have fun or colour in my life!! I don't envy them diddlysquat, don't believe they are superior, don't see any evidence of their value to me, us or you, and could quite happily live without them. The touristy treasures to which you allude are ours anyway and would draw a crowd whatever. As for Republics being expensive, as mentioned elsewhere - no political system is cheap - democracy isn't cheap but I don't see anyone flooding the streets demanding a dictatorship. And speaking of which, if you look at the characteristics of a dictatorship - which include maintaining the status quo, offering the masses incentives to remain as they are, and suppressing opposition or dissent, I think you may see similarities to our own dear monarchy and elitist brigade!!
I don't need to feel envy or spite - I don't believe these people have anything I could possibly want!!

In fact the cost factor is irrelevant, it's the presumption that Mrs. Windsor is the head of the church, the head of the army, the head of the state, the head of this, that and the other, that cannot be accepted.
And that Charlie-boy will succeed her and be all the same of this, and that his son will one do the same.
They might make trips to Australia and New Zealand and express a few words of sympathy months later about an earth-quake (New Zealand) and some floods (Australia) to give themselves an image, as Wiliam did, but then anyone could travel at the expense of the State and rehearse a few words in order to claim to be heir to all the above-mentioned titles, if the State commissioned them to do so.
The Windsors have lost in Australia, where the number of people in favour of them not being monarch of Australia exceeds thenumber of those in favour.
A recent poll in Australia has confirmed that William would receive more no-votes in a referendum on the Windso-monarchy than his grand-mother.

The idea that Mrs. Windsor represents Britishness is out of this world!
As "heasd of State" of 14 countries, and "head of the commonwealth", and "head of the Anglican Church" from England to South Africa (bishop. Desmond Tuto is a member of the Anglican Church), she has too many heads at stake to be "British".
This mania of being the head of half the world's population is hardly a representation of the average British person signing on, or shuffling to work in a Morris Minor, or claiming somesort of benefit to have the weekly pennies

if they have a morris minor they must be doing alright, bit of a collector's item nowadays.
i agree that her majesty covers a wide area with her powers, i believe they are issuing her with a bicycle soon.

I don't mind having a royal family I just resent paying for it.
Marek
I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)
I mind!! I am not comfortable with the expected reverence in which they are held just because their ancestors put it about a bit!

is it really that much fun being a royal?
all that waving must be very tiring and having to ask people continuously must be wearing.
one would still like to be one though.

Not a single good reason given to switching to a republic.
You are really showing your shallowness.
You do not have to 'swoon' over the Royals as Bern puts it to appreciate the great benefit they are to this country.
All I see here is spite and envy however the republican fringe put it.

barry
your references to " shallowness, spite and envy" suggests that you are losing the argument.
to your credit you have not mentioned the dreaded socialism.
