Brian
I have nothing against smokers, they provide a good tax return, it's a free country. What I do object to is their litter and puffing in my direction. The same with MacDonalds,I don't eat them but couldn't care less if others do but again I object to stepping over their rubbish in the streets.

As schools have been mentioned, the litter trail from Morrisons to Frith Road and in the Dour has increased enormously since the little and not so little horrors have been back at school.

I wholeheartedly agree with Bern and Marek.
And as for people smoking whilst driving - I once, in Lincoln, saw the result of an accident when a man dropped his lit cigarette on the floor when driving and bent down to retrieve it.
He ended up straight into a telegraph pole and was seriously injured. He could also have hit others.

Brian.
I am big on compromise and think it should be used much more than it is now but not for smoking.
Either you have an isolated place for smokers or no smoking in public places.
It is not fair on babies' kids youths men and women who do not smoke to be forced to inhale or put up with the mess and health hazard's that smoking produces.
I also think smoking should be banned in rooms at home used by infants and young children.

garyc, thats a pc outlook.at one time you could smoke allmost every where untill the anti smoking came into force, now smokers are looked apon as dregs of sociaty evan though they excess taxses on there habit.
if all smokers gave up smoking [and theres millions of them] the goverments revenue would drop dramaticly, which in turn would cripple essentauall services, like nhs hosp[itals, education etc.
but no one has answerd the question i posed.would the person who droped the fag butt, would that same person be fined the same amount for droping a sweet wraper.probaly not.

As he was charged with littering, yes he would have been fined for dropping a sweet wrapper.
As an aside I hate the smell of tobacco on peoples clothes and breath. YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just an aside for all those complaining about having to smell smoke on others. The other day I was in a supermarket queue when the woman in front of me left the queue and wandered over to join another. I immediately stepped forward and then realised why she had moved away, the stench of a woman's perfume was almost suffocating.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

I am never quite sure which is worse, stale or cheap perfume or B O both of which stink to put it mildly. I have to put up with the latter quite often at the shop, again YUK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Brian,
My post is absolutely not PC.
It is my personal view that I believe is right, from my point of view.
I am with Marek, I have no problem with people smoking, that is their right and I respect that right, I have many friends who smoke.
All I ask is for the same respect, which is, I do not want to inhale their smoke or put up with the mess that accompanies their smoking.
More should be done to help smokers who want to continue smoking with respect to other's but those that choose to smoke without respect to others and to litter our streets with fag-ends, should be stopped.
All litter droppers, of all kinds, should be fined to cover cost of clearing up their mess, but I don't think fines of £75 are the answer.
More smoking areas, more signs and more receptacles would help.
You talk of compromise Brian, smoke in designated smoking areas and then non smokers cannot complain?
That's a compromise.

Chris.
Very true and of course not the wearer's fault but since I worked down the Channel Tunnel, breathing in years of diesel fumes, I have become allergic to many perfumes, sprays and paint fumes.
So much so, when a woman passed me in Ashford Woolworth's, I passed out.
My wife can't wear any of that stuff now, save's me a few bob though.

I have read all the posts on this thread and haven't witnessed any non smoker getting on their 'high horse'. It's all about respecting one anothers rights, feelings and considerations.
I now find that if my wife and I want to dine out we have to sit inside as the al fresco diners are all smokers and sods law being as it is the smoke always comes wafting over my lobster or moules.

And that litter thing - those bits of derelict furniture are dreadful and punishments should always be proportionate and send a message. But it is a continuum - if we tolerate litter at the thin end, people will always push the boundaries and litter will get bigger. Zero tolerance of litter will produce, well, zero litter!!

Outdoors is always going to be an issue.
If an isolated place, with good extractor fans above, can be used then maybe that would work.
If not then I do not want to sit next to a smoker whilst I eat.
In my case it would be crab and winkles, Marek
