this is the waterfall next to morrison's, the new garden commissioned by the town council was badly littered to.
this was in the river next to the college.
there were many more examples of river dumping, thought i would just stick to two.

I was wondering what those sacks were on the river-bed, and thought they had been put there for a purpose, because they seem equally laid out, not that I could figure out for which purpose.

First Dour clean up by the WCCP volunteers of the year is set for this Wednesday. These will be monthly until October. That should improve the state of affairs somewhat.

Appropriate thread title Howard - why are people such slobs and couldn't care less about where they live ?
How do you instill a sense of pride in them ? It may have a bit to do with the "broken-window" syndrome, or it may have something to do with a broken society syndrome.
Some people care passionately about where they live and have standards and work hard to keep them up, but others (slobs) have no standards and don't give a toss about anything, only themselves - very sad.

Those pictures really make the point..fairly awful to see this kind of thing. People do the same thing on the beach but fortunately we have a great team of cleaners down here. I imagine they are from the Dover Harbour Board but they really do a great job of keeping everything pristine.
But this just reminds me of something I saw the other day...
The Premier Inn carpark. The coach driver sweeps his rubbish out onto the street...I assumed he was going to pick it up as he was fastidious and taking a long time about things. I went off about my business but when I looked later the rubbish was still there but the coach/driver was gone..

Easy Paul, complain to the company with pictures enclosed plus date and time, the driver should receive a ticking off.

I did leave that vague Roger, it is in fact just off the car park of the High Meadow flats so they didn't actually take it far!
Two things here really, littering and the theft of a trolley!

There are no excuses for slobbishness. But, at the risk of getting political (a small party of you may, if you wish, assemble later and throw eggs at me...) there really is something about doing things that achieve engagement and inclusion rather than punishing. Without boring you (too late!!) an example of this is imprisonment: using prison as a punishment is a good thing, a grave sanction - but if we really want to reduce reoffending or reduce slobbish behaviour like the above, we need to make sure people are responsible for their environment, and no amount of banging up will do that, whatever we like to think. After - and during - the punishment must come the engagement with people. Some will be a lost cause, but lots won't be. If we really, truly want to change things ragther than just punish people, we need to change how we do that.

Ian
Those photos could be used to prosecute that person; I'd be happy to follow it up - if you'd like me to.

I understand your frustration Ian, but while there may have been no action before, we do need to sort it out.
Thanks for the photo Alexander, but was it picked up and put in an appropriate receptacle - ie a bin - any litter bin will do ?
Everyone I speak to about dog-poo says the irresponsible dog-owners are a disgrace, but still we can't reduce it.
Breaking through the ignorant, lazy, disgusting habit of not picking it up, is very difficult.

Looking at the above engraving Kath, it seems that the hand gesture 'High Five' originated in 'Ye Olde Englande'
