13:0790067I heard on the radio that football presenters Andy Gray and Keyes made sexist remarks about a female assistant referee not knowing the off side rule....they forgot however to switch off their microphones and so their comments were broadcast live on Sky sports...oops

I think therefore I am (not a Tory supporter)

13:2190071made themselves look a bit silly there, people are saying that it might put women off becoming referees or assistants, which is even sillier.
the abuse they will get from supporters and players means they will have to be as thick skinned as their male counterparts.

13:3590075Bit of a fuss about nothing in my opinion, the media must be bored.

14:1090079The unfortunate thing is the lady assist referee had a fantastic game, but instead of that being discussed it is the comments from Andy Gray that have stirred things up for the wrong reason. In my opinion that guy is a complete idiot who spoils the experience of watching games on Sky so i can only hope this helps to see the end of him.

16:1790096they reckon there is a lot of sexism in football.
i do not see a problem with female officials, just so long as their old man's dinner is on the table the minute he gets home.

17:0490100My first thought was along the same lines as Jan and BarryW, but I have heard the comments now, and actually they were said in a derogatory way so are offensive. Regardless of whether they targeted women or any other group of people, the casual assumption of stereotypes and the rather dismissive and aggressive tone changed the context for me.

17:1090104Bern - I think the difference it that they were jokey private banter that are only known about because mikes were left on. If directed at the ladies directly that would have been wrong.
We all enjoy a spot of light hearted banter about people now and again but would be mortified if they heard it.
PS - I do not watch football, cant stand the over-blown game. Could I explain the off-side rule, no way....even when I was reluctantly playing the game at school.

18:2190111the two culprits have been red carded by sky for tonight's match.
i think they are making a mountain out of ant hill here, even a storm in an egg cup out of it.
feel free to add any other mixed metaphors.

18:0090218Yes you are right Brian ...Andy Grey has been sacked from his near lifelong job at Sky Sports. I remember Andy Grey way back from his days as a player and although doing this job on Doverforum has made me aware of just how sensitive people can get over various topics, I think that Andy Grey being sacked over this from a near lifelong job thats given his fans lots of satisfaction and entertainment, sounds a wee bit extreme...I dunno.
I remember the controversial Ron Atkinson sacking several years back, when he used the term n*gger which was altogether more extreme, I think they were right to sack him in that case.
There is no doubt about it though this is a very sensitive era.

18:1590224there has been more revelations of statements made by andy gray, the man seems to have more lip than a mick jagger lookalike competition.

19:1690232Silly man does not know when to keep his thoughts to himself, it does seem that he has made sexist remarks before. His sacking seems a bit extreme but maybe the bosses have been waiting for just such an opportunity.

19:2090234he would have broken his terms of contract, they have a lot of women subscribers, hardly good for business.
england in general has more female match goers and amateur players than any other country, makes you wonder how the washing up ever gets done,

20:4890246It seems to be more than simply a slip of the tongue or a blip, if we are to believe the other incidents that have been flagged up.
