Thank you Alex. You have obviously missed my point that journalists can not be trusted to take a balanced view of such a document; their judgment as to what are the salient points is not necessarily based on the desire to inform us of the whole truth.

With you there Peter
Sadly neither can politicians or military strategists either - almost everyone has an agenda that they are pursuing whether personal, organisational, societal or political that influences and colours their view of the world, the perception of others actions and intentions, their assessment of risk, their judgement of the value/worth of other people etc. Very few are immune from this.

And to that list must also be added the authors of the document, whoever they are.

I haven't missed your point, Peter, but it is your personal view.
The likes of Sky and BBC would not fabricate news articles based on a NATO report concerning our and other soldiers in a war zone, surely you must realise this.
We're talking here of a war that has already cost our Nation hundreds of lives and many wounded, and that cannot be concluded be defeating the Taliban.
In fact, there are to be peace talks with the Taliban, which just about explains everything.
Let's just sincerely hope that we and our allies come to a speedy agreement with the Taliban, Pakistan and president Karzai's government, so our soldiers can come home without further losses.

Maybe
They will however emphasise the bits that pander to their agenda and prejudices, take bits out of context to make a story etc etc

Alright, if Sky and BBC are not good enough, then here is an extract from the Daily Mail:
'ISI (Pakistani Intelligence Service) is thoroughly aware of Taliban activities and the whereabouts of all senior Taliban personnel. Senior Taliban leaders meet regularly with ISI personnel, who advise on strategy and relay any pertinent concerns of the government of Pakistan.'
Those questioned, including senior Taliban commanders, told how Islamabad uses a complex network of spies and intermediaries to provide strategic advice to aid the Taliban in fighting the coalition.

Hopefully this will put an end to all Peter's doubts to the existence of the Nato report. It definitely does not seem to be a fabrication of the British Press, and. as the Daily Mail reports, families of fallen British soldiers are realising that their sacrifice was all for nothing.

i don't think anyone doubts that elements of the pakistani intelligence serice are supportive of the taleban alex.
that is why they were not told of plans in connection with mr bin laden.

Alex we are not talking about fabrication but selective reporting. Just as dangerous. If you don't know ALL the facts, don't comment. Full stop. And nobody with an IQ bigger than their shirt collar size takes the Daily Mail seriously.

Too late, Peter, the British papers have already reported and commented, can't turn back now!
It's become public knowledge.

Peter, Peter, steady up. "ALL the facts"????????
No such thing is possible, not no-how not ever.
We each MUST be free to comment on anything whatsoever, anytime. He who knows all the facts knows nothing.
Alexander has precisely the same right and justification to speak as does all and any other.
All the facts...indeed...you are a caution.

Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

i was about to post the same tom, even historical facts that we learnt at school have been debunked.
on world affairs we are only fed stuff that people choose to, therefore we must read from as many sources as we can and debate from there.

I know the Daily Mail gets castigated on here regularly for being a rubbish paper, full of lies (I don't read it by the way) but I don't believe that I have an IQ the same as my (shirt) collar size.
I do read it online sometimes and today it has some real spectacular photos of the snow and ice around England and Europe.
I know it has stories on immigration, race, irregularities in our judicial system etc. - articles that the broadsheets don't/won't carry, but I am interested in the stupidities of our judges and how they let off criminals etc. etc.
I think Tom (and Howard) is right, that it is very rare that we get ALL the facts - sometimes not for 30 or more years.

Alex and Reg try reading any of the following to get the point Peter and I are making
Manufacturing Consent by Noam Chomsky
The New Rulers of the World by John Pilger

#41 #42 #43 say it all for me, regarding reporting. As for the mess that is the worlds defences there are too many factors to be read into one document, not all about oil but mostly about advantage and profit.
