Just seen this on the Dover Express website.
Dover firefighters rescue seagull trapped in guttering.
A BABY seagull trapped on someone's roof was rescued by Dover firefighters yesterday.

I really can not understand why the seagulls we see around town are protected, they are found far inland as well as round our coastal areas. At breeding times they can be very dangerous as illustrated in Howard's link.
BTW I voted yes about the pesky things.

I am not normally in favour of culling wildlife but I think there is a case here. In some of the world's cities food spiked with a contraceptive effect has been fed to feral pigeons with great success, it was mooted years ago about Trafalgar Square but the idea got dropped. I believe the move inland was due to over fishing in the Channel and North Sea and although that problem is not so bad they have got used to scavenging in towns and cities. The growth of wheelie bins has contributed to their aggression as there is not enough available food.

I was working in the garden the other day and was dive-bombed by a sea-gull lots of times; every time I moved, it flew at me, then sat on the roof and then flew at me again. I got fed-up with this and went indoors for a while; it must have got bored as it wasn't there when I went out again.

It may have to come to that Brian, not only attacking people but dining on song birds. A chap at the RSPB said numbers were declining and the public should stop feeding them.

On the plu side I heard on the Radio that they were dive bombing the migrants camp in Calais, I knew they had a use.

Walking in Pencester yesterday at lest half dozen flew very low just missing a couple of small children.Someone is feeding them . The sea gulls I mean.Its quite scary.

Dover is full of idiots who think it's acceptable to feed them. I've pulled up a few of them in the past but they can't see what is wrong with it.

Agreed Paul, the big problem is they seem to have no natural predators to help keep the numbers down plus no fear of people

Time for on the spot fines for those who feed them, not even doing the gulls a favour as it stops them looking for proper food rather than existing on stale bread.

there is around 3 elderly females that feed the dam things,1 in particular brings a shopping trolly full of bagged bread, rice etc.down to pencester gardens.

Is there a bye-law about feeding the birds in Pencester Gardens, if not there should be one and enforce it.
