Metal Steeling now appears to be the norm and low life people with no morals at all stoop so low they steel from War Memorials, Church's, Crematoriums and even pick the lead from grave stones. I know some months ago River church had the metal memorial p-late ripped off the war memorial and on the news tonight they said at least one War Memorial a week is having the metal memorial plate ripped from it.
I just cannot get my mind around how people can stoop so low, they have to be the lowest of our society and should be treated that way if ever brought to court. Surly with metal theft being so bad these days, it is time for the Government to act and bring it stricter regulations on the sale and purchase of scrap metal. The scrap dealers themselves must often know when the sellers are passing on stolen metal and they do not appear to care as long as they can make their money.
Time for something to be done. both to give the police a better chance of finding these low life and for the courts to deal with them with a long prison sentence.

Too right Harry. Caught the tail-end of a piece on the news, they have found a way to trap them, I don't have any details.
The problem is that these days they will just get a metaphorical rap over the knuckles.

My bet is that the thiefs concerned only go to certain scrap-metal dealers who they know, and hide the stolen metal in or under other items (washing-machines etc.) during the transport.
It's probably a few organised rings with relatively few thiefs involved, but who travel around and search for metal to steal, and then go and do the job when they feel unobserved.
They have one advantage: once the stolen property is melted down, it's gone and is untraceable.

As someone who spends a great deal of time in cemeteries photographing monuments I am shocked when I re-visit some to find that bronze plaques, gates, vases etc have been stolen. Apparently today marks the start of a national campaign to help combat this.
"To combat the threat of theft each monument will be forensically marked with SmartWater, assigning them with a state-of-the-art forensic signature that can only be seen under UV light. Once applied SmartWater is virtually impossible to remove and can withstand burning, sand blasting and long term exposure to UV. Furthermore if a thief attempts to remove SmartWater they risk inadvertently spreading forensic evidence onto their clothes and any tools they are using. This can be used by Police to link them directly to the crime scene".

I have a Google news alert on the subject of the recent desecration of the Presbury war memorial which today yields some tough talk and determined action from local Police...

Scaffolding must be one of the easiest things to steal and maybe not that difficult to resell or profit by re-use. All you need is an hour or so, a truck and a spanner.
Some effort is made to paint the tubes, but it takes little more effort to re-paint. The scaffolding outside my place now was erected by a team in a liveried truck, the scaffolding nearby likewise, but it was struck (taken down) by men in a hired truck...no name , no pack-drill. As they say.
Mostly, I think, the security is for the benefit of the occupiers of the building. Who would bat an eye in seeing some bloke walking about a scaffold?

not the case here tom, the building has been empty for decades.
i'm not sure why the scaffolding is still there, no work has gone on for some time.

The building will be insured Howard. If it were to be intruded upon by an arsonist, say. The scaffold firm would need to show due diligence as to security.
Nowadays with more and more scaffolding being covered by sheets advertising this and that it may be the building itself under threat of being stolen...scaffolding comes down...hey-presto empty space?

there are other measures that can be taken keith as seen in post 5, although for stealing from war memorials and cemetaries i think prison is the only answer.

It is often not just the theft of metal that is the greatest problem, often it is the danger they put other innocent people in by the theft it's self.
When such theft puts life in danger and as Howard has said when the metal is from memorials etc it should result in a prison sentence.

that's an easy one keith.
firstly the white collar ones that can use their undoubted skills to pay back money.
secondly the minor repeat offenders who can carry out basic public works that each town and city in the country needs doing.

So what should we do with them Keith? There has to be punishment that fits the crime.

Maybe a public execution could be on the cards opposite memorials that have been so grossly vandalised by these degenerates
