There are too many variables, that's the point, from the less usual decent service, through adequate to the frankly appalling, which in my personal and professional experience is the most usual. There is no excuse for such variance.

Something to lighten things and make you smile.
The first night my husband was admitted I stayed all night with him. There was one very confused old man a few beds away who was creating a lot of work for the overworked nurses. On my way back from the toilet he staggered up to me put his hands on my breasts and said "I like these". Luckily I am not one of those who is easily offended so just turned him round and led him back towards his bed, the passing nurse was so very grateful I did not make a fuss as some would have done.

Saying and doing are not the same thing Barry.
Jan - that made me smile!
Vic - what the pipe are you talking about?
Vic the governers training events are not for bringing up issues , they are exactly what they say an introduction to the role and process of being a govenor for a trust .
Jan you made me smile as well

This going on at this time.
"You said. We did.
Tell us more.
Last year, 48% of surveyed staff told us what they thought about their working life.
They wanted better communication with senior managers, improved appraisal and to be able to work more effectively as teams.
We have listened and taken action. What can we do better.
At this very time the East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust is doing a NHS Staff Survey 2011,
Tell us more-fill out your staff survey, All this sounds like a caring move by both the Trust and its staff, and will bring about a better service to the public.

The Trust might be asking the staff but do they ask the patients what they would like or need and act on it.

They do that as well Mrs Higgins, they are always doing road shows etc,but look at what happen only last week at the town hall public meeting but no one went =,and that is happing all over not just Dover. it was only afew weeks ago that I was in hospital for just over two weeks, and when I left I was asked to do a survey on my stay, and was there anything they could have done to make my stay a better one,and how was I treated by the staff, and what did I think of the food. There was more but they are the main ones.

of course nobody turned up at the meeting, the health authority had already made enough noises to make clear that the birthing unit would be closed.
questionnaires are normally binned before being read they are just there for decorative purposes

That is not true Howard, the public turning out in numbers does work If just half the number that keep on running down the N,H,S, also turned out to the meetings it would be great,I try to go to most, and as I said before, there are more staff then the public.and alot of the staff do not get paid to turn out themselfs to the meetings, they are there because they want to help the public, a public that in alot of case,s will not move away from the TV sets.

Point one many of us cannot attend open meetings and forums due to work. But to get back to the subject Margate hospital saved my mums life and no dispute about that.In fact if a top specialist hadnt been visiting her father who was a doctor at Margate she wouldnt have survived whereas my father died in Ashford in what i would describe as squalor.

The (sadly) cynical view from the public that these consultations are a con and the decisions are already made, create a self-fullfilling prophesy - no one turns up to give their views or opinions, so the people doing the consultation thinks no one cares anyway, so they'll do what they want.
If the public have a view, the public must give it; they are given the opportunity to put their ideas forward, so it really is the right time to give that view.
I can appreciate the reasons for the cynicism, but you can't grumble if you never say what you want.
I think that Vic's posting, number 73 is spot on - get off your bum if you have a view or opinion, or send it via email or letter if you can't get out for any reason.
I also appreciate than many working people may not be able to attend, either because of work commitments or plain worn-out after a hard-day's work.

The main problem with so many of these meetings is that those most affected are unable to attend, by this I mean the sick and the disabled.

some interesting posts
i have to say that having to use all the local hospitals over the past few years my experiences have been more positive than negative.
but having viewed other posters and being aware of the NHS failings i recognise the problems, and like all posters see the need for change.
but dismantling a service is probably not the best way forward

Every foundation trust has to. Undertake an annual staff survey. Its an obligation for any trust under their. Constitution. Hhowever if you look at the results year on year. One of the main outcomes is for better communication and for staff to be listened to. For this to continue to be an issue shows that whatever is put in place. Isn't working and hasn't worked for quite a while

sarah
some interesting points there.
you feel a private run hospital would give you more say as staff?
ALL POSTS ARE MY OWN PERSONAL VIEWS
Morning Keith. I am not sure. A lot of the staff involvement in the NHS is lip service. And tick boxes. Co ops may be the way forward as their inclusive structures may lend themselves more readily to this process.
