We fight for, and many die for, the rights of women in Afghanistan and yet adhere to the opposite stance at home. Perhaps this is why immigration is so high, many being attracted here by so much fellow-feeling?

Much is seen as positive... except equality.

St Georges is a private club, it can choose its own members.
The Open is not funded by govt, this MP should stop meddling

Thats not the point Howard. Vista has a naturist swimming session, not to my taste but its club rules

I don't play golf and would not personally choose to join any kind of social club that excluded women but David is right, it is up to the club and it is nothing to do with any MP unless they are a member.

Totally agree with David #2 . he correctly states it is not the Government who decides this but the R & A. Peter Dawson current secretary has commented on this with regularity.
As Barry says most people would chose to support & join clubs with open membership.
Royal St Georges has a pretty exclusive membership & long waiting list.
Ladies can play the course if I recall correctly but not be eligible for membership.

One small error Paul, there is no waiting list, only people waiting to be invited.

sounds like a place posh barry would be comfortable in, noggins at the 19th hole etc.
digressing a bit about sexist policies during the 90's i was going out with a lady who was the vice chairman of ilford north blues.
i used to really enjoy that i as a non member of the club could buy drinks at the bar, whilst she had to sit down and wait.

Royal St Georges are a bit snooty....When I decided to play golf I had interviews with four clubs.Three of them accepted me
without a handicap.RSG captain politely explained they did not permit membership without a handicap. We shook hands and I
went to my car, just outside his window, which was a seven series BMW with my personal number plate on.As I drove away
the captain waved me down and offered me membership......I joined Kingsdown & Walmer club.
RSG could copy Vista and have a naturist session but the men would have to be `good friends`.....teeing off could be against
the `rules` as it would involve two swings........the MP gets my vote.......but only on this issue........

As the lone female voice so far I think the MP should have minded his own business, in modern Great Britain St Georges should allow women members, what on earth are they afraid of.
What I fail to understand is why any sensible modern woman would want to join such a narrow minded old fashioned bunch of fuddy duddies.
When I win my lottery millions maybe I should set up an all female membership golf club but it would not be for just the elite rich.

I was not referring to what he actually said more that it had nothing to do with him, a bit like us I suppose.

An own goal for the area if we miss out on the boost to the local economy that the Open gives us.

As I recall, the claims of boosting the local economy were simple bald statements that cut across the ground swell of dismay from the local traders.

How ever back to the thread.....women should be allowed to be members of `Royal` St.Georges......Her Majesty should take up
the challenge.......
At present the `gentleman`members are not permitted the pleasure of following a lady`s fore-some......for a `long`game of golf
....for when you `finally` reach the Tee to enjoy the aroma of their perfume.................
