08:0769898Yes it is the River Scarecrow Trail on both today and tomorrow.
It is good fun and exercise. You pick up your Trail Map at the Mill then you walk all around River following the trail of scarecrows working out the theme of each.
Two years ago there were lots of people doing the Trail and what was good was they were stopping and have a chat and a laugh with friend and strangers alike..

15:4170113 A beautiful sunny morning today gave me a nice walk from Whitfield to River, and visit the scarecrows at the cornmill. Nice to see both Vic and Leslie both working hard out there, and for Vic to give me a quick guided tour of the mill. The size of it it is decieving from the outside, with so much inside on all the floors. Thanks again Vic, very educational.

18:5670158Lesley and myself only help out on some events and even then Lesley does alot more then myself, but most of the real work is done by Pat,Lis,Ant,and Allan, and the rest of them and they have been doing it for years ,six days aweek and up to about 80hours some weeks and they do not get paid one penny, they will not say it but I will the mill needs alot more support or one day we will see it closed up, the River Parish Council needs to support it alot more then it does with funding and also we need alot more support from the public, if they do not get more funding in soon it could close,a lot of work is needed to be done both inside and out but the mill do not have the funds to do that work so there you have it use it or see the locks put on.Just take this weekend the Mill sold about 61 maps at a pound each that goes to the Parish council, but it only got in £21 for Teas etc and that is for the Mill, the mill needs a turnover of well over £200 perweek in the summer weeks to stay open, if it was not for the events that Pat etc do the MILL Would now be closed.

21:5870172I haven't been able to support the mill in rcent years due to being abroad, but the work Ant and the team of volunteers do there is just incredible. It irks me that such a terrific asset to the town and district doesn't get regular and proper funding from RPC, DDC, KCC.
But Vic is spot on, use it or lose it.

22:2670182May I add the £61 will go to a combined pool of money which is given out to village organisations who can apply for grants Last year both Crabble Corn Mill and River Village Hall who also struggle were given grants .
River residents as I have already stated previously pay for the recreation ground and our PCSO .
I support the Mill when I can

22:3970184Something like that might help Howard DDC over the years poured a lot of money into to the Mill .Today the Mill was being used for a private function .No use for passing trade ,
Meanwhile our local Methodist Church did very well yesterday selling ploughmans and cream teas .,plus coffees .I understand from the grapevine not everybody who bought a map at a £1 availed themselves of refreshments .Maybe we should have charged visitors to our village a toll ??
Did Sid come and see thescarecrows .??

07:1470197I agree that the Mill should be supported more; better promotion in various leaflets and web-sites too.
In the 30,000 Discover Dover leaflets I produced last year and the 10,000 earlier this year, I put Crabble Corn Mill and the other historic sites and attractions in Dover, in there for free.
I even made a cruise day excursion some years ago that included the Mill, costed it up, including the cost of the coach, admission fee for a tour and lunch there. sent it to Kent Tourism who oversee these things, they said it was excellant - and then nothing.
If tourists don't know about it, then the events they put on should be supported more by local people - not just in River but the rest of Dover.
There's a cider festival in October, hope lots of you go to that.

22:2470419Sue, I don't live in River, I live in Kearsney depite the best attempts of politicos and the Royal Mail to tell me I live in Temple Ewell. So, when Karsney puts on an event I will try to support it.
Seems to me, the Methodist Church (is anyone actually Methodist these days?) by holding such an event is actually taking money away from the Corn Mill. Just my view, as my MT mate Keith would say.
