having gone into this a little more,
it appears it went through committee as some labour cllrs didn't turn up.
it got to full council where all 18 cllrs turned up.
Lamoon (who is not known to be a labour supporter) pushed the motion, if nothing else at least the tories/indies are challenging labour.
Although with Dover in the state it's in, I hope thet are going to look for bigger issues than whether or not to wear a robe.
Listening to those present it appears also that it has again called into question the democracy of the labour led council.
Some independents asking to speak on the motion and being denied whilst one labour guy spoke three times.
I hope DTC can look into the bigger issues of a declining Dover and even work together to achieve

I was reading this thread with some interest - though it was difficult to know exactly what was happening. Sue said "a motion will be put re Councillors wearing their robes" and then later she said the motion was defeated. But no-one actually said what the motion was - to force councillors to wear robes, or to say they didn't have to. So I delved into the council minutes and it seems that Cllr Lamoon was putting forward a proposal to say that councillors should always wear robes on specific civic occasions, Mayor-Making, Zeebrugge Raid commemorations, Remembrance Sunday etc. I assume some councillors don't want to wear robes, and therefore, it seems, the proposal was defeated.
The thread then went on to discuss the Mayor-Making ceremony itself and whether or not it is a waste of money. Again, no-one actually said how much it cost. They seemed more interested in scoring political points and discussing hats. So I looked into the council documents again, and it seems the Mayor-Making costs £2,400.
That seems quite a high figure for one evening of civic ceremonial, even though one of the town council's main functions is to maintain civic traditions. Perhaps people might like to have a serious discussion about whether this is too expensive or not.
If it is felt that the cost is too high, surely the councillors can raise the issue at a council meeting and put forward suggestions as to how economies can be made. They are, after all, the ones who make the decisions.
I look forward to reading sensible comments.

I’m sure not many people realise how much Mayor Making costs. Not all Town councils have such an elaborate do.Parish Councils And some have twelve or more Councillors they donot celebrate neither does DDC.Each to their own .

Hi Jim
It appears some incoming labour cllrs oppose (rightly or wrongly) wearing the robes
This prompted cllr lamoon to try to keep tradition
It's a bit of a mess now as I'm sure cllrs will be unaware if they wear them or not.
I have said on here before that I campaigned on DDC to have the lavish garden parties done away and sue supported them to wear her many hats
Just like on DTC if their are ways not to have the food it should be looked at.
The danger with some of the postings is that some post just because this year it happens to be a labour led council
Yet like I said above some have double standards of not taking the same view whilst
on DDC
We have at least 1 council to many now and should concentrate getting rid of at least 2 of them
