  More like two mouths Willetts. Typical politician says one thing with his left mouth and the opposite with his right mouth.
  On this issue it has to be said that anything which causes people to drive less and reduce their carbon emissions can only be a good thing. Sustainability is vital in order to keep the world in a healthy condition for our children and their grand children.
  Tim Yeo, for example, is doing his best for the country and the planet. Not only is this hard working man serving us all in Parliament as a minister of the environment but he has other hard working jobs as well and earns a pittance.

  a shocking read philip, the problem is that he is in a safe seat so that there is no pressure on him to be accountable for his actions.
  
  on the positive side i can see no mention of a taxpayer funded duck house.

  Gosh you all seem so surprised by the suggestion of this, why?
  
  It isnt as though it is a stealth tax, there is no hush hush, they have told us what they want to do.
  
  And after all it is a good capitalist tax as it redistributes wealth from the moderately well off and below to those who are much better off and presumably therefore better than us, after all, how can we be expected to fund the removal of the 50% tax without squeezing the bottom and middle till they squeal

  I think HMG would be better advised to first consider introducing some form of road tax on foreign trucks that use our roads free, gratis and for nothing - the same as is done in other European countries - before hitting on already beleaguered home-grown drivers.
  
  I was under the impression that toll roads didn't work as a revenue generating method, certainly if the M6 Toll is anything to go by; grossly underused and subsidised to the hilt - and does nothing to relieve the congestion on the rest of the M6. The Dartford Crossing only succeeds in causing congestion and making money for its shareholders. And they want to build another bridge??? The Severn Bridge is another farcical toll road. Because you only pay to go into Wales much of the traffic, especially freight, takes the longer route going in and only uses the bridge to escape Wales!!
  
  The other question that needs answering is whether or not we actually need any new roads, and where would we put them in any case? Upgrading the existing motorways and main trunk routes is one thing but building new roads is an entirely different matter, with one possible exception that I can think of. The M27 was originally supposed to be the South Coastal motorway running from East Kent right down into Somerset - but it was never completed, and probably never will be. It would almost certainly have relieved the M25 of a lot of the traffic heading for the west country from the south east.
  
  Then, of course, there is the building of new rail routes for the high speed services to Birmingham and beyond....!
