The IFS have published their verdict on the budget and this is what they say about the change to these age related allowance - pretty much what I have been saying about how the media storm is unjustified and way out of proportion.

QE has had a much more detrimental effect on pensioners adding 1.5% to their costs of living (QE 1 - instigated by last government) so far, with more to come.

Barry, however well you argue that financially the numbers are sound, you must admit politically it is a disaster.
There are lots of political blogs now reporting on the number of Conservatives who are leaving for UKIP as a result of the budget being the final straw.

ray refers to blue loyalists moving to ukip, i think it is more because of the back tracking by dave over the treaty "veto", he had the grass roots thinking he was with them for a short time.
