[A little personal indulgence...]
Farewell Kay Matheson, whose heart was of the stone
she, with others, keenly felt the loss within the monastery of Scone
theirs a tale of derring-do, the equal of any war time raid
so often of such petty crimes history is made

Farewell Amar Bose, of loud-speaker fame
his love of music and his technical expertise changed the game
from fixing radios in his parents front room
to becoming a faculty member at MIT, and giving the bedroom some extra boom-boom-boom...

Farewell George Charles Henry Victor Paget, The 7th Marquis of Anglesey
for him the volume went up as far as eight with his, History of the British Cavalry, (1816-1919.)
he was of a long line of horsemen, each a good egg
the first Marquis via Waterloo, became the owner of the patented "Anglesey Leg"

This time we mark the demise
of a vessel I've long loved
my morning ferry to paradise
into which my non-typing hand was shoved
Oh woe is me for the loss of it
of my favourite coffee mug
the washing machine, the culprit
so natch, I'll blame the dug!

Farewell Mel Smith, Comic, bookies son
both erudite and dopey, two pantomime dwarfs rolled into one
predestined for the stage was he
Drama was to the fore as he studied experimental psychology
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/celebrity-obituaries/10192703/Mel-Smith.html
Maybe it is still a little early to get the full picture, but in the meantime online comments to the above share a selection of his work, mostly via youtube.
This is more like it, the well rounded story of one "Melvyn Kenneth Smith, actor, writer, director and producer, born 3 December 1952; died 19 July 2013"

What I have said above, of the well-rounded story, appears now to have been merely polygonal, here the final few corners are knocked off...

P.S.
Smith embarked on a fruitful parallel career as a director of television commercials, winning an award at Cannes for his campaign for Carling Black LabelIgnorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

Today we bid a sad farewell to J J Cale
a match for Hendrix and for Mayle
a Greenwich Village troubadour
his, the soundtrack of an age and so much more...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jul/27/jj-cale-singer-songwriter-dies
And here is a passable Obituary...
http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2013/jul/28/jj-cale
Alas, the thing reads more like a collection of sleeve notes, and has more to say about Clapton than Cale. This is a great pity, for Cale 'was there', in the right place and at the right time, for many contemporary musicians who have since garnered a following for themselves, Taj Mahal, for one. Like the Beat Poetry gatherings of the years before Rock Music came into its own, many a starving innovator would jam for long hours with Cale, as he did with them. Perhaps I'll have to seek out Rolling Stone for a more true Obit, or JJ's own site for personal recollections and notes of remembrance...we shall see.
