So another four weeks of bare earth and a few weeds and the holiday season started at Easter.
What crazy planning from DDC,

if they are that hard-up plant evergreen shrubs that need little or no maintenance.

I made the suggestion early part of last year about business sponsoring the black flower tubs, but it was turned down.
I do think that many businesses would be happy to pay a small amount of money towards making the Town look good and more inviting.

The beds in Market Square have been sponsored previously .

Hi Sue
I was told that the black flower tubs are made of cast iron and we would not be allowed to stick anything on to them, but they have four sides and each one could have four sponsors, raising enough money to pay for the flowers and I'm sure that the four businsses would be happy to put some water over them.
Doesn't seem to be a CAN-DO attitude by someone.

Kath, have a look out for the flower boxes around Lydden next time you drive through, built by fairies

and planted by SLUGS

Re the above, of course there are no CCTV cameras in Lydden to catch the fairies at work
I went to the market square today for the first time since this thread started, here's the details of the sponsorship that isn't happening there -

Howard, that was sold off and is now the storage building for the DODS theatre luvvies and it's their baskets, pop in there for a bit of relief and you could be in for a surprise.
Reminds me of something that happened when I was at Pfizer, we were always being moved around and rooms changed in those days. A colleague came out of a meeting in a building where he used to work in need of call of nature, walked through the door of the gents and had got his flies open before he realised it had been converted to an office and several typists were looking at him quite alarmed

I'm led to believe the figure to sponsor/advertise is in the region of £5k

Way out of the reach of the small businesses who need the publicity most.

I'm not sure if that figure is the monthly or annual cost

That is a ridiculous sum for a private firm to charge for a small flower bed.
The advertising on the black flower tubs should not be more than the cost of the flowers; this should an exercise to make the Town brighter, not some external company richer.

I would have thought £500 for a year would be more appropriate, £5000 would be daylight robbery.

i would be happy if they paid nothing and just provided the colour.
we have more shops open than for many years yet the town centre and market square are an eyesore.
whoever takes the reins on friday must take immediate action, very little money involved.

I agree Howard, but there must also be an element of the businesses accepting some (financial) responsibility if there is an active Town Centre Business Support Manager.
I appreciate very much the high cost of running a Hight Street business, so any further requests for money may not be greeted with glee.
Financially supporting such a person is what the two Councils should be looking at, the rest can be organised by that person.

Roger, I think small businesses accept enough financial responsibility when they pay their almost crippling business rates.
Their advertising expenditure would not be able to cover such a large amount, local papers are as much as most can afford.

The advertising I have seen on roundabouts in the area seem to be let down by their surroundings which tend to be litter strewn and weed infested. Not an image I would want to be associated with if I had a business to advertise.

And advertising on Doverforum is more affordable with very high viewing figures as you all know.
We would love to tend one of the plant troughs and have a Doverforum logo on it. Could help raise more funds for further development of DF.
