...before the end of 2017 - IF, the Conservatives win power in the next general election.
As I have advocated before this will be a referendum on the terms of a renegotiation of our relationship with the EU so there is a positive vote and not just an 'in/out' choice.
The Conservative leadership will, if a satisfactory renegotiation is not achieved, be prepared to recommend leaving the EU.
The big question will be around the aims of the renegotiation but, one thing is certain, an overall Conservative majority that would see this referendum become a reality will, without a shadow of doubt, be the most anti-EU parliament since we joined the EEC. The pressures for a very tough position will be immense.
The stronger the anti-EU feelings in the Party are the more likely we will be to quit this crooked and incompetent organisation.

As Philip II of Macedon said to the Spartans...
"You are advised to submit without further delay, for if I bring my army on your land, I will destroy your farms, slay your people and raze your city."
The Spartans in reply said...
"If"
Ignorance is bliss, bliss is happiness, I am happy...to draw your attention to the possible connectivity in the foregoing.

sounds like a thoroughly bad egg tom.
back to the possible referendum, 5 years is a long time much can change in that time.
i believe the currency will crash before then, failing that barry's assertion of a two tier currency could come into force.
the other scenario would be germany finally cracking after being asked to bail out another weak economy and leaving the union.
without germany there would be no union to have a referendum about.

Barry, your pro-EU speech sounds like that of the Persian Emperor at Thermopylae:
He sent a messenger saying to the 300 Spartans:
Surrender, or the sky will become dark with arrows.
The Spartans: Then we will fight in the dark.

Or perhaps it was: Then we will fight in the shade! Sounds even better!

lets be quite fair here
firstly there is no way the conservatives will win an outright majority so lets put that one to bed.
next, mr cameron is still clear thatr he will never leave the E.U., all the time he is leader.
now its fair to say a lage number of backbenchers are baying for his blood so maybe he will be gone before the 5 years is up.

The British people are mainly ante Europe because of the invasion of asylums seekers, and Easton European cheep workers taking jobs and forcing down wages
The conservatives would not include stopping this supply of cheep labour in there list of priorities,
The only thing they would stop would be employment rights and controls on the city of London.
And labour would have us move out of are homes to accommodate there lobbying minority friends.
An In or out referendum is the only thing that would epees the British public.

I think Mr. Bibby has it about right.
But what's likely to happen if the Euro-zone collapses first? Will the whole EU farce collapse in sympathy? One can but hope!!

Keith (Sansum) as so often the case you allow your own imagination to get in the way of the facts.
The opposition to the EU is very deep in the Conservative Party and Keith Bibby has not even touched on the reasons. It was Labour who opened the floodgates and decided not to bring in the transitionary arrangements, as allowed by the EU, for the new Eastern European members. The Conservatives were outspoken in opposition to that. Our hatred, yes hatred, of the EU comes from our distaste and opposition to the interference, big spending, big government, Stalinist Europe that the EU has become.
I have said many times that the Conservatives will be the Party that will get us out of the EU. There is a clear trend that will be accelerated by way things are going. Our future is very clear - its outside the EU with a EFTA style arrangement.

Major did sign us up to mastrick with out a referendum Barry, allowing expansion.
Something many conservative MP admitted later was a mistake.
Maastricht Treaty
Article 3
(b) a common commercial policy;
(c) an internal market characterized by the abolition, as between Member States, of
obstacles to the free movement of goods, persons, services and capital;

We will either get an in-out referendum with no ifs and buts, or the EU will collapse anyway.
And we will get it with or without a Troy government.
Barry, you believe we will be still sitting here in 2017 waiting for the Conservatives to give us some nonsense on a referendum forcing us to stay in the EU, with an in the EU or in the EU option.
You should consult the reality of turnouts at the polls in the UK and the recent massive electoral defeats the Tories got to boot. The actual percentage of the electorate prepared to vote for this Government or anything connected to it (party councillors), is about 10%.
The economy is on machines, and today the Bank of England has announced it is turning the machines off for a while, having decided that they will not after all inject another Quantitative Easing into the system.
They must have got my message.
The game is over, Barry!
