14:4983045Ill-educated and prejudiced parent power scares me! IfI needed a plumber I would not expect to be asked my opinion about the best methods of plumbing. I would expect to be consulted about options, about prices, but not about the actual plumbing!! I expect education experts, teachers et al, to do their job in a kind of partnership with me as a parent. Too much parent power is dangerous! Accountability is different, and necessary.

15:3583052I'm not sure that is a good analogy , Bern. If someone messes up your plumbing you can have it put right. But if someone messes up your kid's education the consequences are lifelong.

16:0783058corporal punishment will never return, too many teachers would refuse to administer it and the nasty ones would dish it out when they fancied it rather than when it was deserved.

16:1783068Howard with regard to corporal punishment its correct ref teachers and i dont want to muddy the waters, but having come up the catholic church schools and seen teacher violence that there needs to be tight control on how far teachers can go.
But without doubt they need to be given moe powers than at present

16:1883069Perhaps we need to look at it from the other direction: parents and pupils need to have their responsibilities made clearer.
