I couldnt really blame RBS because we are all crying out for the banking industry to be responsible. The Telegraph seems to be taking an anti RBS stance there, but throwing good money after bad is not anyone's solution. The Peacock store in central Dover is almost always empty as far as I can tell...as is the other one inside the Co-Op...Im not sure if thats still in there as i gave up going in the Co-Op.
But its a great pity to see any one shop or shopping chain go down or to see job losses...particularly as they have outlets locally too.

have to agree i don't know how they could expect the bank to carry on helping them.
all other low priced retail businesses have done well in recent times due to customers looking to save money.
why they have two branches in dover is beyond me, someone in head office must see the weekly figures.

A long lease agreement in the Stembrook location I believe. Co-locating works for some businesses.
Peacocks have dug a hole they can't get out of, as Paul intimates... there comes a point where throwing good money after bad does not make economic sense.
Their closest competition is presumably Primark but neither really hold my interest - pretty low quality goods made at the expense of very low paid workers.

chronic quality from both of the above two, i would add george at asda to the list.
primark and george at asda always seem busy whilst peacocks don't.

Strange how George Davies has been responsible for so many brands that have gone from very high quality and then to the other extreme.

didn't know that but shouid have guessed with the type of stuff they sell.
I like Peacocks and get the majority of my work clothes from there, its horses for courses , I want cheap fashionable clothes that reflect a current trend , I dont necessarily want to be wearing them in 6 months time , when Ive finished with them they go to the Charity Shop

I am not surprised at peacocks going to the wall but I was surprised when our QS in Deal closed.
Store 21 brought out QS and although it was a very busy shop, they still shut it.
Are certain shops shutting to keep others busy?
Matalans, Primark and others, that have been criticized for low quality goods, are a godsend for many people, especially now, who could not afford to shop anywhere else, which shows, when a shop like Peacock has to close, which in recent times became a little bit more expensive.
I know this because I shop in Matalans, Primark and I used to shop in QS.

I love peacocks and will be sad to see it closed , cant stand primark its horrid .

I must agree GaryC.
When times are hard - as they are now, people have to cut their coat according to their cloth.
We might like the idea of buying perhaps better quality, more expensive clothes etc. but needs must.
Betting shops do better in times of recession, as do charity shops, but as not everyone is hard-up, the quality shops should (but often don't) survive, but when the lower priced/lower quality shops go under, it makes you wonder where we're going.
M & S in Dover still do quite well - on clothes and food.

It would be sad to see Peacocks go, they saved that corner where woolworths had been form being an empty eyesaw, always have a wonder around there when in Town.

yes jan that prime location would be a big loss if empty.
i notice that the lady members like it more than their male counterparts, i think they have a better choice.
when i go in there i am usually the only male.

I have to admit I have never been inside Peacocks even for a nose around it has never appealed to me at all, yet I always pop into Bon Marche.

I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.

the bon marche part of the group has been sold off, the buyer intends to close 160 of its 390 shops.
let's hope the dover one survives.

I hear that 'La Senza' has been bought out saving at least 60 outlets including the Canterbury branch, when all existing stock has been sold they will rebrand under the new name. I believe that the new owners will be re-employing original staff in the saved branches.
