Paul is out of action due to computer failure, probably won't be back on for several days. Meanwhile, Chris Tuthill, Myself and Barry will be looking after things. Paul can't access emails or anything, completely out of touch.

Oh dear, I am very sorry to hear this. What a nightmare for him. I hope the computer recovery will go okay and not be too painful.
So is this official confirmation that poor Paul is "completely out of touch" then?

When I first saw that headline I thought PaulB had hurt his back and was in traction or something.
Glad to hear it's not quite as serious, mind you having said that if my computer or broadband has problems I feel like I'm minus my right arm!
Hope it gets resolved soon.

Thanks guys. Im back in harness although with mangled periphery's. I clearly at this point need a new computer. Im sure MAC's are good but I havent got the stamina to tackle anything too new at this stage in the game. Im limited with my technical abilities..very limited.
But here are a couple of simple questions so if anyone knows anything please let me know
Is it possible to run 2 computers on one screen?? not necessarily running at the same time.
other question
Can anyone recommend a good PC? I currently have a Dell Dimension 4700 which was quite a good one, well in comparison to the other rubbish Ive had. ALDI are currently pushing a Medion, Ive had emails about it and it seems to tick all the right boxes but its not a name I know.

Why not go along with Rick and convert to a Mac?
In my business I have some real compatability concerns with third party software and over conversion otherwise I certainly would.

Hi Paul,
It's easy to run two PC's at the same time. If they are both connected to your router you could do a remote desktop connection, ctrl + r, then in the run box that pops up type 'mstsc' this will bring a connection box with a prompt for a computer name, if you type your other computer name into this box (providing remote connections are enabled on the other PC it will connect). If the two PCs aren't networked you could purchase a KVM which would allow you switch between the two PCs whilst using the same monitor, mouse and keyboard.
Something like this (http://www.dabs.com/productview.aspx?Quicklinx=4MWX&SearchType=1&SearchTerms=usb+kvm&PageMode=3&SearchKey=All&SearchMode=All&NavigationKey=0) would work.
Or you could go down the path of virtualisation, but you probably don't need that hassle :)
If you're buying a PC, stick to something like a Dell.
Any problems....
Chris

ChrisK, is spot on with kvm box, you can get cheaper ones on eBay, if you want to, that is.
I also agree with sticking to Dell, but mid or high range, not cheap Dell.
Not sure why you want second pc, but laptop would be better than second tower, all new laptops come with wireless connection and can easily be added to home network for sharing files, folders, printers etc.

I found this while looking for another article about hacking into OS-X
http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=758 it's a little out of date, but certainly does highlight that OS-X is just as vulnerable as XP/Vista. The most secure O/S is usually built on a linux kernal. The article I was looking for came from a hacking show where fully patched O/S went against each other. The hackers cracked OS-X first, followed by Vista and then Ubuntu.
Although by no means am I a supporter of Microsoft or it's operating systems.
Paul, it does depend on your budget, I would recommend a Dell Precision work station but they start at around £700.

Really grateful for all that ChrisK and GaryC. Excellent stuff there to absorb. Glad that its all do-able. I will defintely get round to trying a KVM, hadnt heard of those before. Also thanks re the suggestion for Dell Precision, I know what to look for or to aim for. The reason Im tending to go for a second tower is that the current one is obviously feeling its age and will transfer slowly but surely to the new one which will then become the centre of operations. Yes rather surprisingly Dell seems to be a good make. I say surprisingly as I half expected mass market ordinariness when I first got it...but it turned out to be much better than expected, but age catches up with us all and it wont last a great deal longer.

PaulB, another option for you, is to buy external usb hard drive & transfer all data you need to save to that drive, prior to buying new pc.
One reason is for back up, second for transferring to new pc.
My preference would be to buy new pc with XP not Vista, XP does still have issues, for instance updating to serve pack 3 is still causing trouble, but it is more stable than Vista, that's only my opinion though.

I haven't had any problems with Vista - not one blue screen of death on our 2 PCs since we have had them
Dell are good and very reliable, but don't get caught out with one having limited expansion capabilities...
Been nice knowing you :)
