There are plenty of grey squirrels in the Dover area, they've taken over from the red squirrel.
Grey squirrel pie should do well in the local restaurtants, might attract many tourists too

I am pretty sure that I once had squirrel in 'The Cabin' when Roger Marples still had the place. I remember it being quite nice.
As for the article, it made me laugh. Only because of my usual reaction to anything from 'The Daily Mail'.
...another Daily Mail story about aggressive, diseased foreigners threatening the lives of the native British population...Typical!

i don't think it will catch on big time, us adults know that they are first cousin to rats and kids see them almost as pets.

Yes Darren, Roger and Pauline usually had squirrel on the menu. It's not easy to get right, it's either tough as old boots or turns to a mush but you don't know which until it's too late! I have been told that squirrel makes mighty fine sausages though.

I bet it does Peter. Surely you are the man to take on the challenge: to perfect a recipe for such a thing!?
I honestly think if someone tapped into such a market it would be quite something! There are people out there that take delight in such things.

Melissa, I don't think we 'need' to eat them, but in the case of reducing the population I think it makes sense not to waste such a thing.
Perhaps the fox hunting crowd could come up with a way of killing them. They seem to be quite good at 'efficient pest control'.
I'm thinking 15 men riding mini motorbikes; wearing gorilla suits and fezzes; with a pack of ravenous chiwawas. They could ride around urban parks playing the knightrider theme tune on kazoos whilst chasing these diseased vermin. Of course this would all be in aid of catching 1 squirrel.
I hope that no one attacks my idea just because they are from the countryside or on the grounds of class...they just simply wouldn't understand.

Using Mel's thought that they are "lovely" animals we should definitely not eat lamb, beef, pork, chicken etc.
Yes they are cute and I love to watch them but they are also evil little bu***rs that do a lot of damage and can eat small birds and eggs.

wouldn;'t be much left for our dogs to chase if we ate them all.
one of the great sights is seeing a dog chase one and the squirrel just managing to escape every time.

ONLY the grey ones Howard.
The red ones are fine...I seem to remember that it was a red squirrel who taught me about road safety.
They should be defended for this if nothing else.
