19:1792199...to keep the status quo by which prisoners do not get the vote.
By 234 to 22 they voted in favour of the following motion:
"That this House notes the ruling of the European Court of Human Rights in Hirst v the United Kingdom in which it held that there had been no substantive debate by members of the legislature on the continued justification for maintaining a general restriction on the right of prisoners to vote; acknowledges the treaty obligations of the UK; is of the opinion that legislative decisions of this nature should be a matter for democratically-elected lawmakers; and supports the current situation in which no prisoner is able to vote except those imprisoned for contempt, default or on remand."
Well done for standing up to the ECHR.

19:2792203Government minsters were given leave to abstain so that will account for up to about 100 of them. As for the rest I really dont know. It was never going to be a tight vote anyway.

20:4992225more an issue of a day off rather than a stand off brian.
i suppose many of them had more important things to do than vote on this issue, after all those expenses forms don't fill them out themselves.

07:4792250I hope they vote (and I mean vote, not abstain) the same way when it comes to (NOT) increasing the EU budget.

08:4992258Most of the Labour Party didnt vote on this for some reason. They vacated the building.
Mr Cameron forgot yesterday for a while that he was the Prime Minister as he gave the bog standard reaction to this topic that he used to give while in opposition.
"The thoughts of prisoners voting makes me physically sick!"
said he in full opposition mode. However later when he fully realised the complexity of the situation he was less aggravational. So, kicking prisoners rights into touch and telling the European Court "UpYourDelors" wont work because we already have prisoners compensation claims in the pipeline (for being denied the vote for years) to the tune of £120,000,000 and rising.
Seeing the costs involved Mr Cameron had a rethink later. Some piece meal deal will have to be reached otherwise it will cost us all serious money. Money better spent on hospitals or indeed on some of the facilities the nation is losing right right now across the board.

10:1992267strange that the reds failed to vote, they were making a lot of noise prior to yesterday.
maybe as paulb says that there is little chance of escaping the prisoners right to vote.
dave likes his sabre rattling on the issue, let's see what he actually does.

10:3492272Better then to kick the ECHR into touch, quit it and stop their meddling once and for all.
If this issue results in a confrontation with them then so be it.

13:1392295barry,lets look at the options shall we,
a,give prisnors the vote and be done with it.
b,pay compensation which we cant afford.
c,pay the fine which we cant afford.
d,pay fine and compensation which we defintly cant afford.
so i would option a because its the cheapest by far.
which one would you choose, seeing that the countrys broke according to the tory party spin.

08:1992366Exactly Brian - so option "e" with quitting the ECHR is the best one. Simples !
Why do you keep insisting the Country isn't broke, why call it Tory spin ? Even prisoners know the country has no money left; even your beloved Labour government left a note saying "sorry there's no money left, we've spent it all"

18:2392407Brian, on your post number 14, you said "seeing that the countrys broke according to the tory party spin".
To me that says that you believe it is only the Tory party that's saying the Country is broke.
