Roger, irrigation systems should be a major export for Britain, and I'd have thought that the opportunity would be taken up here in Kent to create local work for a good cause, and bring in plenty of revenues, especially since many desert-countries are oil-producers where money is used as wall-paper.
When their oil runs out, what then?

the subject comes to the forefront again, brazil now overtakes us as the number 6 economy in the world and we are still giving them aid.
it is not a surprise anyway as the b.ri.c. (brazil russia, india and china) have been on the up for some considerable time.

I think what seems to be happening with these emerging BRIC countries is that they are performing like racehorses but leaving a whole swathe of their own population in the dust behind. In other words there is a huge divide between rich and poor within these new economic powers. Proper advanced society, if I can put it that way, hasnt arrrived yet to even out things.. to greater spread the wealth down through the system. These economies are probably too young in that sense.
The top tier soars ever upward but the poor get lost in the wake.
Government Minister in charge of this stuff Andrew Mitchell is keen to see aid continue, he is a very enthusiastic supporter of continued aid ..so it seems is Mr Cameron himself..despite continued murmurings in political circles by all parties that our charity in these strapped times should begin at home.

over seas aid should stop all together,to much corruption in it to make it work properly.

I think it should stop until it can be organised to it is given to charitable groups who spend the money on projects to help the people, rather than give to corrupt governments as per African countries.
I think there is a big argument to only give to Countries that suffer from natural disasters - like floods, earthquakes and tsunamis.

In comparison with the 'poor' countries we are not doing too badly. How many homes are without TV, phones, games consuls, computers, fridges, washing machines etc?

The rot started in 1948 when we started to dismantle the Empire.

i think the empire dismantled us, we came out of things a lot better than some of our fellow colonialists who continued to cling on to their prize assets when it was clear that times had changed.

Overseas aid should not be in the form of money.
We should only give food and equipment made in the UK. The money, taken by way of special tax from the rich and super-rich people in Britain, should be spent in British factories and food processors to purchase the products, and the aid then despatched to the poor and needy.
It would probably help out own economy as much as the destinataries.

# 34. agree.
# 29................shanty towns come in many forms...............its all relative!!
Indeed it is, and relatively speaking this country is well off.

I fully disagree, Bern. Many in this Country are not at all well off. Some are, but an ever-increasing number are not.
If families in a shanty town can afford to have 5-10 children, then they must be better off than many of us here, and I can't afford to even bother concerning myself with their problems.
Can I be bothered to answer...? Only just. This country is relatively well off, that doesn't mean some people living here are not poor. I can't really find a way in to respond to the non sequitur about 5-10 children.............

i find it difficult to believe that occupants of a favella are better off than anyone.
