Depends on parts Howard. The point about being not repaired was, there was little point spending money on it if it was to be replaced.
I can just see the postings on the Forum.
I think it's fair to say there are issues to addressed about the Market Sq. with the future of the Big Screen, [once contract agreement ends] & fountain and it makes sense to address them comprehensively rather than separately.

If the fountain saw the summer/Autumn out and there wasn't too many breakdowns on it, it would make economic sense to bring it back, rather than pay out loads more money on a featureless water-feature.

will be a pity in a way if/when it does go, council officers had got the hang of organising events there, the olympics on screen was a great success but the stuff on there now does not attract any interest.

Does the big screen bring in a lot of extra people with their subsequent extra spending to the town, if it does it should stay if not good riddance to the awful eyesore.

Decision time over next 6-7 months Terry.
Contractual arrangements range between BBC & LOCOG[Olympic body].
Dis- entangling legals is never easy.
The Big Screen was free & supported by KCC who ran the Olympic project.

It's a pity that local businesses couldn't take advantage of "affordable (what's that ?) advertising on it.
If it stays (the big-screen) and the responsibility for it is taken over by a private company, they will probably charge local businesses too much, so it won't work for the benefit of the Town anyway.
If it is to stay, I would have thought that shorter hours would be sensible too.
The Olympic banners and brackets were another great opportunity for local businesses, but again, a private company took over respnsibility for them and they were then subsequently offered at too high a price.

Too true Roger. An olympic rip-off by any standard.
