As you’ve already discovered, they are very versatile gadgets! Have you tried getting a word in with your wife via your smartphone app from your bunker........but be careful what you say as it will be held in Alexa’s history! Whilst on the subject I regularly delete the history as a security precaution.
I have paired mine with our video doorbell too and it tells us that there is someone at the door before they ring the bell.
They are much more than ‘just a toy’ for some and can be used to add to your Sainsbury’s online shopping too, if you are so inclined!

And absolutely 'free'! What's not to like?
How can these nice people possibly do it?
Hint. It's you and your data which are being sold.
You are not using. You are being used.

Not entirely true - both sides are getting something out of it. Surely we're both using and being used?

How the heck does the postman deliver your letters without a name and address Mr Frost? Unless you still resort to carrying sacks of beads and find someone to accept this archaic form of trading, how do you purchase your daily needs?
How do you open a bank account without divulging data or...........?
The list of data that you provide just to conduct your daily life is endless...........
Store loyalty cards, internet providers, computer cookies, cctv cameras.......the data gatherers are
everywhere.
I appreciate your note of caution on divulging sensitive data . I don’t know you personally but your postings on this forum and info available online, no doubt gleaned by the Google ‘spider,’ provides a quite comprehensive picture of you.
The subject of identities even provided a great deal of tongue in cheek amusement in the past!

Not really comparable. There's a difference between selling my soul to devil and telling Google which TV show I'm about to watch.

Like a lot of people, Bob, you don't seem to grasp the difference between daily analog data and digital big data. The latter is a whole different ball game. The Cap'n is essentialy correct. When every word you utter is added to every 'like' you click, very emoji you use, every time you use a pre-defined keyword and in what circumstances you use it, every image you look at, every seach topic you select.... and so on. This is true of all social media. The last thing I would want is to add to all that data with a so called smart speaker.
But hey - each to his or her own.

It really isnt about your data, most territories even the USofA have data laws that broadly prevent the worst excesses popular culture imagines Google and Apple get up to with your data.
What they are selling to the advertisers is your attention, they use your data to tailor the ads that you see, the music/tv/video recommendations you get etc and they monetise your time for their gain - to these organisations you are the commodity that they are selling.
