19:3572005Christianity is the Soul of the British State, our national Flag having three-fold testimony to our Christian Faith. We have the English Saint George Cross, the Scottish Saint Andrew Cross and the Irish Saint Patrick Cross.
Christianity will always be the Soul of our Nation!

19:4772008So long as it`s not the new Christianity that teaches/preaches the Earth is 6,000 year`s old, with humans and dinosaur`s existing together, I have no problem with that.

19:4872009more of a case of tradition than religion alex, most of our nation seem totally irreligious.
i don't think that is because they are necessarily atheists, just that television has taken over from church.

i suspected that was the case, wouldn't fancy throwing a stick for that one.
colin
all religions have that in their original scriptures, i feel sure you realise that only fringe sects still go along with the 6000 years bit.

20:0672019Yeah it is authentic Colin, apparently that's Jesus on the horse taking his pet T-Rex for a walk along Margate beach.

12:3672108Rick, your comments are downright stupid, and please keep your insulting comments away from a thread dedicated to Christianity, as sickly comments like yours should be kept to the sickly minds that vomit them up!

12:4972111Keep up the good humour Rick...
Howard I agree with you. The UK is 'of the christian tradition' and I fully sign up to that, love Christmas and all othe traditional aspects of our society. I am also athiest and do not believe in primitive religions but am tolerant of those that do, unless they try to impose their ways to change our British life that is 'in the christian tradition'....

13:3972113To the majority of the population the patron saints are symbols of their country, not strictly religious symbols. Easter is a pagan festival adopted by christianity as is Xmas, harvest festival and quite a number of saints and saint days. It is the traditions attached to these that make up our heritage as we know it and would wish to preserve it.
I thought this was a thread on our flag with reference to its origins. Maybe would should have a new thread for how Atheists, pagans and other beliefs can and do enjoy christmas.
Politics, it seems to me, for years, or all too long, has been concerned with right or left instead of right or wrong.

13:5572114This post set me to wondering about the origins of the Union flag, especially as I'd seen versions with green and pink backgrounds on TV recently, and I'm surprised at how recently it was officially adopted. From Wikipedia -
"No law has been passed making the Union Flag the national flag of the United Kingdom: it has become one through precedent. Its first recorded recognition as a national flag came in 1908, when it was stated in Parliament that "the Union Jack should be regarded as the National flag". A more categorical statement was made by the Home Secretary, Sir John Gilmour, in 1933 when he stated that "the Union Jack is the National Flag". But it is still officially a flag of the monarch, rather than the Union"
And why no Welsh contribution? Their flag has green and white fields and a dragon derived from the arms of a 7th century Welsh king, maybe St George and a dragon wouldn't mix
Which jovial point brings me to The Royal Society of St George; as a proud Englishman I'm a member of the Dover branch and we're always on the lookout for new members. If anyone is interested then forumites can contact me by email or go to -

13:5872115About four years ago our village (Tilmanstone) commenced having St George Day breakfast (this year 'brunch) open to all villagers in the village hall, and has been very successful. Volunteer cooks etc. For an overall charge.

14:0472116sounds a good idea kath, st georges day is largely ignored.
pubs that apply for extensions on the day are refused but will get permission on st patrick's or st andrews' day.
