  Had no idea that people had favourite dredgers, Howard, but we all have our hobbies I suppose.
  
  Pretty sure that the David Church was named in memory of a local pilot.
  
  The previous DHB dredger was the Admiral Day which was working in Ramsgate recently.
  
  I have often wondered where the single fluke anchors came from that are beside Port Control and found out on a recent visit that they used to be employed by the Admiral Day.

  In wasn't aware that people had favourite dredgers either. However, on a recent canal holiday, my good friend Brian Rowland did have a favourite windlass!

  This is the dredger 'Gallions Reach' latterly owned by the Westminster dredging Co. My colleague 'Bob' (94yrs) was on the crew of this vessel when it was summoned to take part in the Dunkirk evacuation. They steamed up from the Solent and eventually ran aground in Dunkirk Harbour -they had to wait 16hrs during an incessant bombardment to get the appropriate tide to get off. They rescued 25 souls including some badly injured who were lying on the decks . The then teenager Bob and his shipmates were doing their best to make them comfortable when a toffee nosed officer got on board demanding sandwiches and a cup of tea- the reply cannot be repeated on this forum.

  Yes I liked working on them to, always lots of welding to be done.They would call me out all hours ,there would be a Hamonds boat ready to take me out to the very big ones,then they would come and pick me up again and take me back to the port, well most times once I got left on there for over 24hours but I got paid for it and a Sunday.

  Another view of the Daniel Laval a few months ago on one of those days when the world is suffused in a golden glow which brings out a dredger in all its glory, truly one to quicken the pulse of any dedicated dredger spotter.
