By having the registration number visible, the authorities can trace the owner and prosecute him/her so they won't do it again. It's not as if it is a one-off.
Sounds a good idea to me - photographic evidence is always useful.

Here's one where I did obscure the number plate. This lady drove up the precinct to Maison Dieu House, found she couldn't get out and drove back. All the way she was saying "Shoo" and waving pedestrians out of the way in what could only be described as a hoity toity manner. She nearly run over a surprised man by Santander. I obscured the number because there was no-one around that I knew who could verify the incident. As it happens Barry Williams followed on but didn't see the front of the vehicle or the lady's actions.

I remember that one Terry - either a very unfortunate mistake, or just plain silly.

Exactly Roger, we've all got ourselves in unfortunate positions at some time or other. It was her attitude that irked me.

Helen you ask if it's fair to single one out when there are so many other offenders. I would love to see that used as a defence to, say, a speeding prosecution. Or selling drugs. Or........

My Christmas has been made. After weeks of parking in that place on the double yellows the car at the top of the thread has finally been ticketed.
Yippee!

maybe they can now concentrate on the regular vehicles that park in an obstructive manner and/or on double yellow lines at the junction of malvern road and clarendon place.
i won't hold my breath, i know that kent county council chaps have been down taking photographs of badly parked vehicles.

Re poststs #19 & #20
Lorries have been parking on that viaduct for years. I used to work at the clearance centre in the western docks and had concerns about the weight sitting over the A20. The drivers don't want to pay the Harbour Board parking charges in the lorry park once they've had their documents processed. Could be a nasty mess if it ever collapsed...

Europcar are parking a large amount of vans up there most nights as well, pleased to say the Parking Wardens are ticketing the Foreign HGV's that park on the double yellows on Hawkesbury Street area . If a private company do take over the Lorry Park they will not be happy with free parking on their doorstep.

would any of these fines get paid though martin, very difficult to enforce. clamping would be more effective or fines paid on the spot like in many european countries.

As I understand it there is a firm that deals with the recovery of the foreign fines, clamping not so easy now with new regulations to outlaw the cowboy clampers.

When I worked on the Road Fuel Testing Unit I attended a multi agency road check, which included the DVLA. I showed one chap a photo of a van that had been parked outside my house with a long out of date tax disc. He quickly informed me that taking the photo had been illegal and to delete it.
