Fair point Sarah, I should have been a bit more specific between government bursary and NHS. The fact still remains that their business has been built on the back of this 'symbiosis'.
Additionally I wouldn't expect anyone to be able to work out any kind of cross charge as the work of nurses and doctors is generally above the rather crude measures of capitalism.

Another example of NHS waste is the fees paid for agency nurses and temporary managers, often a multiple of what a salaried incumbent would cost.

ave just caught up with this - Sarah Ps refreshing posts cheered me up! It is a complex issue and yes it does need full but carefully thought through reform from tip to toe.
Peter - you are very right - sometimes it is out of the control of local managers as the recruitment directive comes from further up the food chain, removed from local need.

Just to let you know that the East Kent Hospital University is holding it Annual Public meeting on the 27September at the Harris Room at the Kent County Cricket Club, the St Lawrence Ground,Old Dover Road Canterbury CT1 3NZ.The time will be at 1800hrs.
This is the meeting you have your say and with all the Trust Directors present, there will be refreshments and this will give you time to talk to them on a one to one,I will be there to ,
I again will be standing for election as a public governor for 2012 as you know last time I came in second place out of 6.
Hi Peter , the agency costs are high , but at some point the " political " ( small p ) decision was made to ban overtime , and a lot of posts are frozen, An NHS employee is more expensive than most employees given the Holiday allowance (that needs back filling ) the period of paid sick pay 6 months ful 6 months half after ? 5 years . The redundancy package is exceptionally generous I believe its one month for every year worked rather than one week . The extra paid paternity and maternity leave . So although the hourly rate is at some times astronomical long term in a pure pounds and shillngs assesment Agency work out cheaper . If what is being judged is bodies avaliable for work and comparative costs agency wins out everytime . There is no comitment from the employer to the individual and a shift can be cancelled at very short notice with no penalty if the staffing levels change .
Hi Bern , I am sure we used to work together

Its sort of mutual Bern

Ha!! Email me Sarah - it might be good to catch up!! I checked out your DF profile but there was no email address.......

the only waste in the nhs is the so called management teams.
That is so not the case!! There is huge waste, but it needs a decent management team to sort it out. It isn't the fact of management teams that is the problem, it is the quality of them!! Let Managers Manage and Nurses Nurse!!

bern,1 exec gets paid the same as 10 nurses 1 consultent and 2 junior docters. now thats a waste of money.
Not if it allows the clinicians to do their jobs unhindered. And I am not sure which execs you are referring to.

head honchos.
There has to be a leader, and clinicians are not always the best at the job. The problem, as I said, is not that managers exist - someone should do the job, which frees the clinicians to do their jobs - but that the quality of public sector managers is often poor. Managers are necessary, they allow things to take place, but they should be value for money and quality managers.
