Today Newham has introduced a new licence that private landlords have to join in a move to try to sort out the bad landlords,
other councils are looking to do the same.
As Dover also has the same problem are they considering any such moves, or similar projects?

edited the title, saw a documentary which showed people living in sheds belonging to ramshackle properties.spent the first 31 years of my life there, always been bottom of every league table but things like that never used to happen.

no comparison keith, folkestone road looks like bond street beside the conditions in newham and some other london boroughs.

I fully understand your previous experience of he London area(parts) but Dover also has some absent and bad landlords and maybe this is an opportunity?

So the good landlords have to pay to sort out the bad ones. Seems pretty unfair to me. The bad ones are breaking the law and councils have ample powers under the law to prosecute them. Typical local government meddling and interference.

As I said, ample powers exist under the law to do just that. Why punish the good landlords with another tax to pay for it?

Mass immigration and illegal building is helping to driving the slum landlord problem,
The removal of the 24 hour inspection notification rule and confiscation of property being used for illegal use could help to stop the problem;
You would be les likely to commit these sorts of crimes if your property was at risks of unannounced inspection and big financial los.
Good landlords could be reworded with free registration to a good landlord contact list on the council web site, so they could advertise there properties for rent.

Reg, unfair means charging law abiding people extra taxes to clear up the mess of illegal operators. Suppose a s215 notice on your neighbour's property obliged you to pay to put it right?
Councils have all the legal tools required, this initiative is a political stunt to make the council appear as if they are actually doing something about it, when they don't have the appetite for tackling the councillors' cronies.

Good landlords should not have to pay for putting bad ones right.
We have bad/rogue landlords in the Priory part of this ward and it shouldn't be beyond our ability to not pay housing benefits direct to these known bad/rogue landlords, or put people who need accommodation into their properties until or unless they have been inspected and approved, but of course this would cost a lot of money to administer.
DDC can't put up the council tax to pay for them, so it would need another way, perhaps involving letting agents, who know many if not all the landlords.
It can be done, but would need some joined-up working.

This is often a letting agent, the one we used years ago did nothing just took his cut and sat on his backside until the tenant moved out having completely ignored most of her tenancy agreement details. A poor tenant will get away with what they can if the responsible person' does not do their job.
Edit, forgot to add no warning inspections by the council would help with some of the problems with absentee landlords. I wish the DDC had the power to withdraw rent money until things improved.

I know I have been talking to a Conservative Cllr who is like me keen to get ALL landlords registered,but I was told there is no chance of that happening as many of the Local Cllrs on one side are all private landlords. Mmmmm i wonder which side that is.
Having a daughter who has suffered from poor landlords I am keen to get something done rather than voluntary registration,because only the good ones register leaving the bad ones to carry on!
If you knew what I know,we would both be in trouble!
