Apparently every school will soon be one, does anyone on here know what benefits there are to the idea?
All I know is that there will be no parent governors and local authorities will not control them any more.

They are independent financially and educationally with external guidance.
Have a look at Christ Church Academy, ex Archers Court, to see how it works - their sponsors are Canterbury Christ Church University.

All very detailed and promises a lot, doesn't mention who the co- sponsors are as far as I can see and what they get out of it.
Why ate teachers and councils of all colours seemingly so against the idea?

Councils opposed as control taken away from them so they all feel a little less 'important'.
Teacher's opposed as individual contracts will make it easier to sack a crap teacher and reward a good teacher + will be able to hire 'untrained' teachers (like the excellent ones who taught me at my Grammar School in the sixties) who have not wasted part of their life doing PGSE, soaking up unproved lefty clap-trap on teaching methods + pedagogy (whatever that might be when it's at home).

I can see the argument here, why should a successful school be forced into the new system?

The Education secretary has done an about turn on the issue claiming that she has "listened" to people. Very cleverly burying the news whilst everybody is following the various elections.

Great to see that the spirit of free-thinking, non-conformity and general awkwardness exists in what passes for education nowadays, even if it is only in the Academies.

I was talking to someone today about this very subject, and they mentioned that a Folkestone Academy Trust had gone a bit wayward with money that was supposed to educate children.

Ive looked into very extesive- There are no better benefits for children- many are failing even when taking over a failing school under LEA control. They run like a business and are registered like a business. They charge for lessons also -they class heads as 'Principles' loseing the old english 'Headmaster' were becoming 'americanised'. They can dictate the curriculum and times they open and close. They use more non teachers for teaching than teachers- there is so much more to these, basically its to cut down on money that the jest of it. You only have to read DCCA past history and inspections since it stopped being a school.

Im not being funny here either...but who chose the design of DCCA in Dover. The 'head' who was involved in the white mound of crumbling mess has done a runner to another 'Academy' because school not meeting its bench marks and leaves us with no 'Head' and fat great white shark sat on top of a hill that boasted a lovely school with history and trees and not so on top of peoples homes!
Renewing that school was a waste of money that Mrs Hamilton had already spent 2 million on before the 10 million plus was spent to create a attached blob to the orignal school. Took down fencing and gate that cost thousands to keep kids just walking out when they want. What a bloody waste of money and a bit hype and let down for Dover. Maybe in future they may turn it into a mini hospital looks a bit like one anyway...sorry not so kind on this matter but its true.

That's well argued. If only it were true. There's a new head and I think people are allowed to accept promotion!

If that is to me Pedro don't get knickers in twist. If there is a new head that news but news did not tell Dover People the head had quit and was moving on. If you only have to read the OFSTED reports to find what I said is true in not meeting bench marks again. More to the point why the 'school' cannot retain staff or get staff as in OFSTED report. This is Dover children's lifes here and all these heads coming and going not doing much good really. Things are not always so pretty on when you take the icing of the cake. I know what I am on about believe me. People can take promotion when then want but I dont think the last head position was a 'Promotion' but more of a move to the old country.

Latest from a fairly local academy, not doing very well at the moment. Despite the management comments, the message was that if your child is in receipt of free school meals, they will not be able to have food from the cold bar. The bit about 'trying hot meals' is a complete fallacy.

Clearly the Academy is not doing very well if children do not have the innovation to swap hot and cold meals amongst each other. Beyond that, one has to consider what the purpose of free school meals is.
