vic,so you would like a turner style gallery in dover, but the question is where would you build it.the other question is who would pay for it.
Short term gain long term loss, Vic. And it is almost impossible to sell artwork and then stipulate where it can be shown! So, I ask again, what realistic options do you have in mind?

susan made a very good point in post 16 about once gone they are lost forever.
regarding an art gallery in dover i cannot see that happening.
folkestone has cornered the market locally in culture, further north we have the turner gallery and whitstable has many small galleries.

I think there are already buildings in Dover that could be turned into a Gallery and that would be just great, but if they were ever sold off,and they stay in the UK that would be alright in my way of thinking, and also they are a national asset and could go on a permanently exhibited collection open to the public anywhere in the UK ,but one would hope that would be London. And this is not pie in the sky thinking all local councils have now been told they must look at all their own assets to see what can be sold off to get more funding.

Going by the replies to this thread so far it seems Vic's view is incorrect.
As nobody has made a comment on my earlier idea I will pose the question again.
Do other forumites think it a viable idea to photograph the art for us all to see in the convenience of our own homes. The whole world would be able to buy the resulting DVD and it could be quite a fund raiser.

Having just read Vic's post, he has found a use for the wonderful eyesore Burlington House.

Great idea

I would even go one step further a have postcards printed with the painting on one side ..The Treasures of Dover'' to be put on sale from Visitor Information Centre,Museum etc.

I am with you Jan and would like to see that done it is a good idea also about the post cards, but I still feel the sameway about what should happen to the paintings. I might add that the one in Margate would be the place to hang them for the public to see them. But long term Dover needs funds and one of the ways to get that would be a sell of the paintings.
A better way would be to work a network and get some support socially and professionally rather than sell off what assets we have. Assets are only assets as long as they remain in our possession. Folkestone seems to have managed very well...............

That is right Bern but they also have Roger behind them and he has £miilions to back it up.
That was kind of my point.........

The point I think mentioned above is a big one - a lot of the 'assets' are donations and likely to have deeds of covenant on them and are not able to be sold
It would be nice to see a gallery at the Officers' New Barracks at the Castle rather than the empty shell that it is
Been nice knowing you :)

I would like to here Vic's thoughts on how he's for selling off the paintings but against selling off the port, a bit of inconsistency there.

Thats a good one Mr Newsam, I am just going out but here is one to start off with, the port is making money, but the paintings are not.
Thinking outside the box, isn't there a way art can generate income.............?

there is two ways showing it and selling it.
