i don't think there are any rules on subject matter sarah, all about how it is discussed.
the children must be terrified knowing what is going to happen/happening to them and some medical staff collude in it.
i daresay that social workers and teachers know or strongly suspect what is going on and turn a blind eye in case of causing offence to other cultures.

that is clearly what is happening keith, walking on eggshells is preferred to actually protecting children.
a lot of these practices are banned in the country of origin of the parents, so there are no excuses for letting them get away with their crimes here.
sadly this will be swept under the carpet again.
No excuses, and there are individuals tasked with protecting the young and their own fear and timidity preventing them in tervening simply makes them culpable. An outrage that this happens, anywhere, but in particular in the UK because we are too fearful to stop it.

If you import the 3rd world you get the 3rd world.

A truly barbaric practice that very sadly only time will change, let us hope that is soon. The only consolation is that at least a medic performing the procedure is better than some old lady with a dirty knife which is the alternative.
I remember learning some time ago it is the women who perpetuate this evilness.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
I try to be neutral and polite but it is hard and getting even more difficult at times.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
People - including women! - can get taken in and "brainwashed" into doing things they might otherwise not do. Remember the convents of 1950s Ireland. I do (only just and possibly only in my families memory!), with a shudder. Even the more recent ones, like the one I attended when I was in my teens. Remember the child soldiers who come to believe what they are doing is "normal". Think of the women who believe it is their choice to wear a burkha - and I realise that one is a little controversial. Think of the men who believe they are right when they hit their wives - who convince themselves that it is "good for them" or they "asked for it". We are capable of such self-deception, and sadly it can bleed into other peoples lives when we believe we have to impose it on them.
And I can hear Chris P firing up the computer to respond with something about religions, so I will get in first and say: I know, I know...........
