Yes Bern, but just try going into a pub in Cavan with my English accent during the Troubles and see how you are welcomed!

i never had any problems during that time except for a drunk on a train between cork and dublin and one snide comment in a dublin bar and nothing at all in the 6 counties.
most people i encountered were fascinated by my cockney accent and just assumed i was a west ham supporter, thankfully i was so conversations could be struck up rather easily.
i remember seeing a satirical t.v. show on rte in the late seventies, there was a sketch showing st patrick's arrival on irish shores.
an ancient irish tribe welomed him with banners "brits out".

With the greatest possible respect, Peter, that isn't anything to do with integration into the British way of life. It;s to do with a country being deeply suspicious of a nation that has perpetrated atrocities on them. But we won't go into that too far - just to point out that it is "foreigners" integrating into Britain we are on about, not the Brits being accepted elsewhere!! Different kettle of fish!

What about dual nationality? Perhaps if immigrants applying for British nationality were required to give up their former citizenship, it might help them integrate better, as they would have made a choice of leaving their old culture behind and embracing a new one.
